clumsy gloves...

Hi fellas, regarding gloves for mig welding.
At the minute I'm not wearing any because I find the ones on offer EXTREMELY clumsy and horrible to wear.
So as I've been welding under a car as you can imagine my left arms all burny!! ba ha ha!!
Anybody got any ideas?
what do you use if anything.

Unfortunately most welding gauntlets are thick due to their intended use, they tend to get more comfortable with use. Remember they not only protect from burns but also possible skin cancer from the UV light produced by welding.

Hi,

I wear a tig glove on my trigger finger hand and wear a thicker glove on the hand I rest the torch on, "which glove depending how hot it gets". You might also try soaking your gloves then let them dry out naturally, this tends to soften them slightly. As for your arms getting burnt, try these.......

I do the same as W4yne and use a tig glove for the torch hand.

not done any mig for some years now but you can probably get away with tig gloves as suggested or thin work gloves.

Welding gloves are a usually a loose fit so you can chuck them off fast if you get a hot bit or the glove get hot.

You really need to cover bare skin though as Robostar5 says as the "sunburn" caused by arc welding can lead to complications.

Thanks for the quick reply's.
I picked up an older but better mig welder than I already have this morning.
The chap I bought it off had never used it.
Its not the best welder but its got more adjustment than my current model.
And as for the gloves he passed me a left gauntlet that's a lot softer and more moveable than my original mitt.
I was reluctant to buy more without asking because, well moneys money and I didn't want to pay for more stiff gloves...
and soaking one in baby oil to soften it didn't seem like a clever idea...
The right hand tig glove sounds worth a try, thanks for the advice lads.

i treat my mig gloves as consumables and only pay 4 quid a pair, when they are new i soak them in warm water for about an hour then let them dry on a window sill after wringing them out. Softens them up quite a bit and makes them more comfortable IMO

No not a good idea to soak the gloves in baby oil! Just warm soapy water, wring them and let them dry naturally.
