so i was wondering does any now of cnc programmable machines just a wee thing to play about with .just a wee something to do.

like a 3d printer or something

fancy doing some again . i was a cnc machinest by trade

Yes it's just G-code

I'd never consider a 3D printer for practising writing code, unless you really want to punish yourself calculating filament feeding along with movement.
Plus most 3D printers only use the basic movement g-code commands, with none of the macro functionality.

If it's just for playing around, I'd possibly suggest some of the cheap chinese routers, but they can involve some frustration getting them to work, and they'll never really be that much of a machine.

You can get some ok little mini desktop routers, they could well be fun.

i will maybe find some software to program /simulate?. instead of manufacture so to speak.

Bit late to the conversation.

The 3018 routers are entry level CNC. Will engrave brass and ally at a push.

Ade Swash did quite a nice intro to these recently.

I keep thinking about getting one but have too many distractions as it is.

Get a Snapmaker, you'll have a 3 in 1 machine, 3D-printing cnc-carving and laser cutting/marking. At least the CNC carving bit would be a good candidate for manual programming.

Disclaimer, I have no clue of quality of the machine.

A colleague bought a Snapmaker from the first batch on Kickstarter, I put it together for him and it seemed like a very nice piece of kit, everything about it screamed quality.
