Hey everyone, just for quick introduction whilst im here. Im a College student enrolled in a Welding program. One of my shop classes are allowing us 10 weeks total, (1 class a week 3 hours long) to build ourselves something of our choice. Everyone is doing tables, chairs, fireplace. Something im not particularly interested in, for me that is too original and to put it simply, boring.

I'm looking for fresh ideas, and perhaps some plans to go with it.

I do have an idea or so. I had the thought of building a unicycle with a bike-style frame on it. The pictures below are Electrically powered unicycles where i got the idea from. I was thinking about building something similar but without the fancy computer equipment and stabilizers, maybe even thought of putting a small gas motor on it.

This is my first time fabricating something so i am very new to it. If you guys had any help for ideas or to help me with the unicycle that would be greatly appreciated. I am willing to spend around $100-$150 on this project(Metal material not included) The metal materials are already covered by the school. However, i can not order stainless or aluminium or sheet metal. So basically mild steel.

if your interested in some form of bike or unicycle wait for chunko to come along, he has some pretty strange and interesting ideas about bikes lol

you could do weights benches, a folding welding cart, something ornamental like a wine rack or wall covering from twisted and welded bar, a small burner made from large dia pipe, a sculpture piece (again wait for chunk to appear). Pretty much anything you want. When in bored i google random things until i find something i would like to attempt

When I was in a similar position on my welding course I built an Engine crane using box section steel. The lift was provided by a threaded bar which despite appearing to be inferior to hydraulic operation in practice proved more useful allowing minute adjustment when refitting engine mounts. I still have it 20 years later & still use it albeit infrequently?

How about building a tallbike
They are a great challenge, lots of problem and a right laugh to ride.

Something like this might make a good project. This would come well within your budget and might antogonise your tutors if they have no sense of humour. You will also have a cool bike afterwards. The hours you mention are about right as well, I imagine you will have to mess about with plans and nonsense like that; this was just cha;ked out on the floor.
Have a look on line for Freak Bikes for inspiration. There are loads of options, some more stupid than others but fr me a Tallbile is the pinnacle. Stupid and immensely practical.
If you want a real challenge you could build a back to back tandem. These are an absolute swine to build but hysterical to ride.

or you could look at recumbent bikes, I dont have any pictures of mine but they are a cool project and useful after finishing your course.
if you do build a tallbike dont blame me if your family disown you.
