collet rack

I tought it was about time i made a rack for my drill chucks. I keep them in a drawer and the drawer was about to give way under the weight. so i got some 40mm oak worktop offcuts and set about making a rack to fit on top of my steel cabinet.

The drill rack has holes at the back for three morse taper and the front holes are two morse. Here's where they live

first time i've ever tried doing that. I don't know what they call it (burnished could be wrong) i did it with a sanding pad with some scotchbrite pad stuck on it overlapping each time i just fancied trying it and it came out quite well for my first atempt

Theres no glue holding the alli into the oak i just milled a five mm slot in the wood and pressed the alli plate in. I milled a groove into the tops of the wood with a ball nosed. somewhere for centre drills and pencils to live

Free hand? Looks superb. I've done a bit using an old valve with Scotchbrite glued on and stops on the pillar drill.

not freehand i did it in the mill. i think i overlapped a bit too much and the pad was too big but first attempt not too bad. i marked out for the holes and centre punched then then burnished which removed all the marking out then drilled holes last

the sanding pad is three inch and has velcro so the scochbrite sticks to it i think i would use a two inch if i did it again and not overlap so much, I thought i would share this and these pics so i might inspire others to do something similar or even improve on my design and post some pics thank you all for kind comments. i've shown you mine lets see yours

Nice one, might try the 2" velcro pad off my mini orbital sander in the mill! Some of the patterns produced can be mind boggling.

i used the three inch off mini sander just stick scotchbrite to it and cut around it i only used two pieces. just be careful at the edges or it rips it off that's why i drilled the holes last

Had that problem with the valve and balancing was a problem as my pillar drill's lowest speed is a bit high, then the new Scotchbrite leaves a different finish until it's broken in so I gave up.

the sanding pad is a bit flexible and a bit more forgiving

have a go Wallace with the two inch pad. the valve is a good idea but theres no flexibility you will find a pad works well. you could get really creative and make some great patterns. something round you could start in the middle and work outwards like a screw the possabilities are endless post some pics if you have a go
