Colour confusion (LRC 235 Land Rover Bahama Gold)

I posted this to a landrover forum, and then realised that id probably get a more sensible response here, so...

Im not good with colours anyway... Normally i just get sent the code, and thats what i order, but this time its for me personally.

What im trying to do is match this -

I reckon thats "LRC 235 Land Rover Bahama Gold" but i dont have any confirmation of that.

What i do know, however, is that this is "Bahama Gold" as the owner confirmed -

I know it looks a bit different but i reckon thats an illusion of the lighting and the lack of a white roof / wheels.


Here is another photo - i cant remember if this was a confirmed code or not, but, still -

Anyway, if you google image search for "LRC 235 Land Rover Bahama Gold" you get loads of photos of vehicals of varying shades. Loads of way more yellow looking range rover classics for example. eg -

...which, to me, looks way more yellow!


Anyway....

You also get some paint sellers colour "swatches", eg -

Im not sure if that looks like the initial photo i posted or not. Im getting more and more confused as time goes on!



And onto the "punchline" -

I ordered some "LRC 235 Land Rover Bahama Gold" from my usual supplier and got this -

Bare in mind that my camera always does odd things to the colours. Basically i reckon that is close enough to the colour swatches that ive seen to be the right mix. Probably.


....but it really doesnt look like the first image that im attempting to match!





Normally when you spray a single stage colour what the tin looks like and what the finished job look like pretty much match. I mean when you open the tin, what you see is, basically, what you get.

Ive screen shotted my string of uploaded photos below, as, of course, you wont see them all side by side, but it makes the tonal change much more obvious. I guess what i have looks more like the range rover and the paintman looks more like the three vehicals to the left.

Is this just photographic variation, or is "somthing else" going on?

From the pics, the first two look like a COB met/mica. Foreign reg so unless you have the correct paint code youre a bit stuck. What are you going to paint with it? Where did you get your colour/code from?

I repainted a white door from a scrapyard to mid-green as a favour to a nice lady I know who had mangled hers somehow, I got the paint matched to the colour code on here VIN plate, when I went to fit it on her car it was nothing like the same colour but as she needed the car back on the road so it got fitted anyway.

3 months later the new paint had faded and it was a near perfect match. Comparing old (faded) on the car to new from a tin or swatch is unlikely to match, if you're lucky the new paint will tone down over time...

So, the process was -

Find a photo of a colour that I liked (the very first photo)

Find photos that seemed to be the same colour, where the colour code was mentioned by the owner (the second photo)

Send code to paint supplier.

Open tin of delivered paint and become confused.


No reg numbers / vin codes involved at all.

Its a bit like when ford introduced Miami blue, a thousand variants and they gave each variant a different code. I would suggest getting a couple of versions made up in those professional rattle cans, do a couple of test cards and go with the flavour of your choice.

normally use a paint code then add tinters on test strip to match on a panel

I have a friend that does paint repairs, so needs new part to match rest of vehicle.

He removes the gas door.....

Takes it to the paint store, they scan it, and mix to the scanned.
No codes involved.

Ford are good at that, Frozen White, Diamond White, more variants than you can shake a stick at. Rover Nightfire is just the same, with four variants and that is without wondering if Ford Cherry Red is a fifth.

and this is the result -

It was over white, so i guess will be a bit brighter than the final colour, but its still much more akin to the range rover than any of the others.

Its not terrible but its not what i had in mind it would be.


Ive got to order this by code, rather than make up with tints, as its very much triggers broom, and not all parts will be done in one hit. Ill never get the same colour again unless its by code.


I might just try and find a RAL that is close. They seem way more reliable.

Go to your local body shop supplier and ask to look through their sample chips. If you mention what type of finish you are looking for, they may well be able to point you to a subset of manufacturer's colours from experience.

Yeah, the Bahama one is supposed to be more brown/orange but they are close.

Yep, what i was trying to avoid. The target colour with the greater quantity of orange / brown looks a whole load classier than just the "industrial yellow" that gets slapped on everything.

I tried to use a sample tool on the original photo, and convert it to ral, and got RAL1027, but thats just brown, pretty much -

Somwhere inbetween those two was probably what i was expecting.

You can use your RAL chips against that to determine the colour shift perhaps and work out what to go for.

I reckon the background here is akin to the original (but, again its just so hard to work it out due to the lighting etc)

The overlay are the closest available classic ral colors.

I think theres an expanded ral set, but the paint place i use doesnt do them.


This does not have to match - i mean its not like im blending in a panel or somthing. I just wanted it more orangy brown, than "chinease powdercoat yellow"
