colouring / painting keys

i have several padlocks of the same type and 4 keys for each lock. the trouble is that it is a pain trying loads of keys every time i want to unlock one of them,
i thought of using those colored plastic covers, but the tops of the keys dont realy fit in them ,, odd shaped tops of the keys,

so i was thinking of painting them and the locks with something, so that the color of the key matches the color of the padlock,

what would you suggest that i could use ?? i dont really want to buy different color paints for each set if i can help it. so is there some covering that i could use that wont end up costing the earth, it has to be hard wearing.

just use some of these write on them which lock they are for no need to mark the locks and cheap as chips

dab of model paint is about as cheap as it goes ...could choose carefully and mix some to make another colour to save £1

or file one notch in the first key , two in the second and so on ...with matching notches or dot punches in the padlock

if you have four keys,make sure there all hanging the same way on the ring,now put them in order of which one you get to first,then second,etc etc.no marks or owt to let anyone else know which goes were.just you.

get a set of locks and use a master key,one key fits all.

I've had the same problem with the garden gate locks and got over it by filing a groove on the edge of the key and the lock. You can feel which key does what lock even in the dark. That's if you're too tight to buy batteries for your torch, like me!

Yeah, I take a notch out the key head with the bench grinder seen other folk drill a small hole, same idea.

I use number stamps. Stamp both sides of eack key and both sides of each lock and you'll find the right key easily. Makes no difference if someone else finds the keys because it'll only take half a minute to try them all anyway.
