The co i'm working for has me building a big rig from 150mm x 8mm box, to hold an 8 tonne wind turbine power unit. They want to shot blast it prior to painting.

The thing is they a) don't need to blast it cos it's not getting two pack paint, and b) want to blast it with this (which has been bought already)

I had to not laugh. Was I right in keeping my scorn to myself?


Oh, and can anyone point me towards any health and safety legislation or guidance on blasting and PPE? I have refused to go anywhere near it, but i'd like to show them what they need to know, as some sucker will end up doing the job.

Good practice to blast regardless of 1 or 2pack paints....

Someonbes being very silly, no, i will even go as far as stupid....

Just buy the material in blasted and primed.

Hitch - its a test rig, not going out of the unit. Also in my experience, a good wipe down with a suitable cleaner (acetone) and proper priming/under/topcoat can last years if done with care and quality paints. If they really want it blasted they should get it taken to SMS shotblasters in Leith Docks. Why they insist on buying diy rubbish (that's BAD diy rubbish!) is beyond me.

I must admit, the thought of using that is laughable, but buying prebalsted material is good, the majority of what we do is pre blasted and primed(unless its for galv obviously). It make the material much nicer to use, no scale to grind off, minimal cleaning up after fabrication..

If thats not enough, lots more to go at, Google -" Grit blasting Regulations" Send them to HSE & COSHH main sites - Thats good for a laugh learning that they have to seal off part of the factory, install filtered extraction system, ONLY trained & certified operators, they can only use certified grit from approved suppliers, & get a hazerds waste licence for spent grit & & &....... lots of fun, enjoy BUT dont get involved

dont you just love it when people in sutes buy stuff and it alway ends up beeing crap as they dont kno what there looking at lol

and acherly im suprised if it will work out cheaper than geting it done proply as 1 it would take a hell of a lot longer with that toy gun than a pro with a big gun 2 your company will need to consider ventlaiton etc. as they need to provide i resonble workin condisons 3 they will need to buy all the PPE

and i think you were right to refuse to do that ( thank god for the HSE)

Cant you just get a mobile outfit to come and do the job???? works for me, media blasting has to be one of the crappiest jobs (other than painting)....... £250 quid a day is money well spent, I am no fan of picking shot out my **** crack........

It's all a nonsense. They don't need the thing blasted cos it doesn't need fancy paint. I've persuaded them a coat of red oxide will do. If they want to jazz it up after, they can. I've also told them about the legal implications - it was that that settled it.

Bucko - i'm a self employed contractor so I do the jobs I want anyway. Re blasting - as self employed, i'd be (sort of) breaking the law if I did it without the right PPE, as self employed carries the same duties as being an employer, under certain legislation. Then again, who's to know if I commit my own dodgy practices (except Drainetta, of course)

A dab of oxide primer, jobs a goodun, I get through the old sprayanywere stuff by the box full, any more than that and can take it to leonardo....
