Comments pls on my first SOLO SS tube weld

Hi All..

Up for comments good and bad I tried my first Solo SS tube weld tonight with the 1.2 mm ER3I6L rod .. Argon set to 6 amps set at 55..

Since the repair and seeing Richard it's such a great feeling to be gaining confidence everytime I pick up my torch now, I'm pushing higher and higher everytime now.. No way are things as I'd like No but I can honestly see I'm on the up and really enjoying the ride..

This is 3mm marine grade SS picture one is just after completion of capping the end of pipe off with a 3mm SS end cap.. Wobbly yes as I still struggle to see, also short little runs before stopping via post gas and rotating tube a little before going again.. Still a bit grey!

Pic Two is with weld brushed over via wire brush...

Pic Three is a small part of bead ground via flap disc to see penertration..

Overall very pleased, but as always looking to improve..

Hi noods. Not a bad attempt a gas lens may help you on a joint like that to give you better gas coverage.
If already using one maybe you need to up your travel speed a tad as amps should be okay at 55. I use the backstep method on tube. Helps deal with the heat better. Videos on youtube.

I know what you mean mTe but with mine I had a big opp on my left eye which has left me relying heavily on my right eye... It's the darkness when tigging I really struggle with.. X

Helmet could be better.. I've an ESAB warrior, with additional led lights installed on top.. Eye problem, they can't do anymore for.. Got a parasite in it which ate into the top surface of my eye, had a cornea transplant but it had permantly damaged below that too which can't be dealt with.. Depth perception is good I hope..

Tigged the other end with a cap on the SS tube just now..
3mm ss amps 60 gas 6.. 1.2 ER316 ss rod..

Tried as suggested with back track on bead also faster run too, not a lot of difference though.. ):

Noods for an end cap on an Nonpurged Joint your current is too hot. It's not a but joint it's an outside corner and the amps per mm guide doesn't apply in the same way as a butt or fillet.
Id approach that with 50 amps tops but with an inside purge which helps a lot with managing a hot weld pool as it aids with cooling as well as inside protection and helps with face side appearance too.
If it isn't possible to do on rotators Id do the full joint in 2 runs. It's easier to do like this especially on an an end cap.
2 ways to do it.
1 hold it horizontal in a vice at a nice hieght and start at 6 o clock round to 12 o clock. Repeat on the other side or
2 stand it vertical and go round it from above all in the 1G position.
Try differnt positions and see where you feel most relaxed. Prop if you need to.
Remember you were most comfortable doing your fillets with the joint facing away from you so move it about and relax.
Oh and don't forget to breathe lol.
