Compressor buying advice

My next major purchase needs to be a decent compressor to replace my Aldi cheapy.

I spotted this last night on ebay, it seems a good spec for the price....

I think it is the updated (facelifted) version of this one on the machine mart site.

I will be running a few air tools with it, some spraying etc. Nothing really strenuous.

Does anyone have direct experience with this range?
Are they really noisy or ok?
Would I be better getting a belt drive unit?

Direct drive compressor so it will be noisy. Have had similar, will walk across the garage floor. At least it is not oilless.

Belt drive is much quieter run cooler.

Seem very expensive to me; then again the same here is $200 (and that's for a C&H.)

Yes, its the noise that will put me off I think.

I might pop down to machine mart and get a demo to give me an idea of how loud it is.

Try Axminster tools.........I had one from there when in uk.........good stuff! good price!

Does seem pricey. 116psi max is not much either. My Abac was about that price, 150litre belt drive, 3hp 14cfm displacement, 150psi.

Watch ebay and eventually you will get a used Hydrovane for that money , very quiet , top quality.

Atlas Copco are excellent compressors. Around the thick end of £1200 when it was new !!

I have had a V twin direct drive 50ltr SIP for over 15 years now, it is no noisier than my friends belt driven single pump and doesn't walk anywhere. The pump makes the noise not so much the motor and if that is in your price range and is the size you are looking for it is a reasonable investment. A big atlas copco or hydrovane will probably come up but it will be well used and need uprated electrics if you are working in a home garage. Compressors are noisy, earmuffs are cheap.

Older compressors are much better made than this new stuff and much more durable. They are intended for industrial use so even if they have a few hours on them they will go on for years.
A single phase , upto 3kw will be fine on domestice eletrics if the correct type of trip is installed.
