Compressor case/silencer.

My first "real" project for the garage. I have a small compressor I use for certain jobs but it's overly noisy.

OK - what means of ventilation have you provided?

I have a few moving containers sitting around so I plan to make a hinge for the rear, cut some holes out for the cables and hoses, pack it with foam padding I get from wheel boxes at work, maybe some breathing holes around the intake and possibly a clip for the front. It should deaden most of the sound and make my neighbours happy!

the bad news is it will overheat . there only intermittently rated and get hot as it is even with free air flow

I was thinking of wiring a computer fan to the rear straight on to the pressure switch output to force air inside. Just need to figure out how to get a lower voltage output so it doesn't try and take off

A computer fan won't do it - you've about 2KW of heat to shift. If you do fit a fan make sure the airflows of the new fan and the existing fan on the compressor don't interfere with one another.

It's not being used with the cover on until I have figured out how to get air inside to cool it. 2 120mm computer fan's running when ever the compressor is on should move more than enough air. As long as the air pressure inside remains positive it will never have a problem as it will force warm air to the top and the planned holes will be there to let it out.

It's all in theory however taken from the same concept of a computer case.

I have no experience with fans other than computer ones, I didn't even know it had a fan inside the compressor haha. Thanks for the heads up I will take a look in to that. I may even be able to piggy back the fan's power supply

make a box from wood, thin plastic containers will amplify some of the noise just like a drum does, create air vents that turn corners as sound waves cant travel round corners

and fit a high flow rate fan small ones wont do it

The fan on those compressors is part of the motor, not a separate fan unit.

There is a fan attached to the motor of your compressor. It draws fresh air from outside and blows it over the motor (may be the other way round but unlikely).

Forget the additional fans for a second. You need to concentrate on stopping any hot air that's passed over the motor looping back around to go back into the inlet. A sealed duct from the outside world to the inlet of the fan is probably your best bet.

Do this effectively and you may not even need additional fans.

Again, keep hot air out of the fan inlet.

Also keep hot air out of the pump inlet - try to extend the inlet to the outside and fit a silencer.
