After it's tripped for the first time does it then run for a further 2 mins after re-setting then trip, or does it trip straight away without running?
After it tripped for the 1st time did you release the pressure in the pump by switching the red knob to off?

Hi after it has tripped the first time it then constantly tips after resetting each time, no I haven't touched the red knob at any stage.

Once it's stopped by any means other than by the pressure switch operating (either automatically or via the red knob) you MUST release the pressure in the pump by switching off at the red knob, it will never restart if the pump still has pressure in it.

From cold the compressor was started up and cut out after 1-2 mins. No difference with the red knob pushed in (Off), to restart the reset button just behind the cowling restarts the compressor once again until it cut's out once again. I've tried an alternative reset switch and the capacitor but no change. It sounds like there's a clicking noise from the wound stator? is this poss.??

There's probably a centrifugal switch in the motor that you can hear clicking. If it doesn't open when the motor is up to speed, the motor could overheat.
Is it a belt driven compressor? If so take the belt off and see if the motor still cuts out.

No the compressor is a direct drive unit similar to the Airmaster Tiger8/44 single phase.

Beginning to sound like it. Basically motor tripping is caused by a faulty motor or the motor being stalled by too high pressure, in turn the most common reason for that is the pipe between pump & tank not being de-pressurised or a faulty pressure switch, but it sounds like you've covered those two.
Before you bin it try removing and checking/refurbishing the check valve:

It's located on the side of the tank where the air pipe goes enters the main tank. Basically a one way valve with a simple rubber washer and spring - you can clean the rubber washer with a bit of emery paper on a piece of glass as a temporary fix. If the check valve isn't working then the compressor/motor has to fight the building pressure in the tank and this can cause the motor to trip. It's worth a try.

But there isn't any building pressure in the tank. If the check valve is leaking you'll get a constant hiss when the pump stops. If it is working the pump has to overcome the pressure in the tank anyway.

Before you bin it take the head off to inspect/clean the reeds, put a drop of oil on the bores and run it for a minute with the head off, then put back together and try. Have you been running it hard in somewhere hot lately or have you been running it without a filter, is the filter blocked. Have had a similar problem with a direct drive before and that wouldn't even start with the head off, clean and a bit of lube and its still going today
