Compressor doesn't unload when switched off.

Hi guys,

The ever lasting battle between my Ingersoll Rand 242 upright compressor and I continues.

Having replaced most of the pipe work and a couple of fittings making everything fit where I need it to, and removing the welded together fittings the previous owner had installed, I'm still having a few issues.

The guage was broken and read around 3bar when completely empty, so ordered a new one from my compressor guy, and installed it. Ran the compressor for a couple of minutes to see if this would work, and hurrah the pressure read 0 and rose when turned on.

A few little air leaks on 1 or 2 joints mean't switching back off to sort these out as I'd not put enough PTFE on them. I then realised that there was an air leak coming from the drain valve on the bottom of the tank, so removed all this to check it out or replace it, and decided on replacing it, so its currently without one until my orders turn up.

Now, onto the minor issue I may have. When I turned the compressor off, there was no hiss as you would expect from an Unloader Valve, and when turned back on the motor span, but the piston pully didn't, so I now assume that the valve is at fault here?

Would this be a correct assumption at all? I have an order arriving tomorrow morning, and if I ring my compressor man before 8am, I can get one chucked on the van to save another trip or waiting.

All help appreciated, maybe I'll get to use the compressor for more than 15 minutes soon, but for now, I'll continue with the blasting cabinet buid I've got going on.

well if the motor ran and the pump pulley didnt the motor pulley must be slipping on the shaft or the belts are slack check both 1st

Are you using the mechanical one built into the pump or a seperate control switch type.

The belt could slip if the unloader valve isn't working.

or it would stall the motor if the belts are tight . i havent an unloader valve on my comp and it still pulls over with the belts properly tensioned under load

If its the same as mine and Wyn`s and i think Tiggler`s has the same its a centrifugal one, in as soon as you switch off its supposed to instantly unload, have you got it adjusted right on the crankcase, and is the non return working properly in the tank.

Belts have a little play in them, but not too much to cause slippage when running.

Yes, it was turned off with the pressure switch lever, which has reminded me that I need to run it up to full pressure once I've got the drain off sorted to check that it cuts out at 150PSI.

Thats a good question, it was the one installed on the compressor when it was built I believe.

How would I check that its adjusted correctly, and where abouts is the non return on your machine?

Yes, the T30 has a centrifugaly operated, mechanical unloader. So when the crank stops rotating the valve unloads the outlet pipe. The non return is on the tank where the outlet pipe from the compressor connects. That should also have a small bore tube connected to it from the end cover on the crankcase. The centrifugal valve device is behind that cover.

In the pic below the non return valve is in the area of the red circle on the left .
The unloading valve is the fitting that screws into the crankcase .....the other red circled area.

The second pic is the unloading valve...part of it inside the cranckcase and the rest of it outside with the small pipe attached.

The last pic shows the weights on the end of the crank that operate the valve.

It isn't difficult to take the cover off and check it all out.

This is the type of non return valve, maybe without the extra drilling for the unloading pipe though. You adjust the unloader by screwing it in or out,the center one in Wyn's pic.
