Compressor from machine mart

Hi Guys,

I am going to get this weekend a compressor. for spraying and using some tools. The tools I want to use would be a nibler for cutting metal, and a cut off tool similar to a grinder, die grinder. Possibly a few other bits later on.

I was wondering if you could advise me. Do I require a 2.5hp with a 50 litre tank or is a 1.5hp with a 50 litre tank powerful enough.

I wont need to undo car nuts. I dont want to move ober to a 3 phase as I only work from home as bit of a hobby. Its really for me to use as I am restoring a jaguar xj-s.

Basic rule is put your money in cfm (hp) rather than tank size, and buy the biggest you can afford.

Power = force x speed which equates to pressure x cfm

For a given pressure you need more power to deliver higher cfm.

As Rtb says, you need the horsepower to get the CFM.

FWIW, we bought a Clarke Hunter 25 (2.5HP, 24 litre tank). It seems fine for most things, but it's not really up to running the 3" cut-off tool (Clarke CAT113). The tool tends to slow down and the motor ends up running constantly to keep the air going. I haven't done much nibbling with it, but the few bits I have done were OK. Air chisel and punch/joggler tool are fine with it.

Right I went for a 3HP machine. 14cfm had to hard wire it! Why could I not just use a 3pin plug? It did not say I had to hard wire in the instructions, machinemart said these need to be hard wired.

So i tried the nibbler superb. Thats all I need for now. Oh and it has oil too so should last a bit longer.

I have a 30 metre hose. So should be able to do most things with it.

You need to hardwire it because the start-up current is too high for a 13A plug. They recommend a 30A fuse.

make a shorter hose up as well if its not needed that length.shorter the better . more cfm to tools and less condensation in pipe. if using the longer hose dont use coiled up as u get a build :up of water in pipe then it chucks it all out in one go . great if u are spraying NOT

Don't see why it needed hard-wired. My 3hp, 14 CFM displacement (9.5 CFM F.A.D), 50L SIP compressor comes with a moulded 13A plug straight out the box.

machine mart [like a lot of others] have to cover their ar5es on safety, I run a tecalemit compressor with a 3 hp brooks motor [not a modern mickey mouse one] with a 330 litre tank off a 13 amp plug into a cooker socket with a 15 amp fusewire soldered on to a duff fuse & have done for years,& before the ''health & safety police'' verbally orang me YES I know it would'' probably'' be better hardwired in but it suits me fine without any problems & I won't recommend it to anyone!!
