compressor help/advice needed

Hi all

I have recived some money to buy some tools to aid in my restoration projects, i have a list of things i would like to buy but would like some advice on the tools.


I want to purchase a compressor for general use, tools, spraying and shot blasting. I have the following shot blasting gun http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/search/filter/grit+blaster/page/1I am looking to purchase this compressor Sealey SA22503 Direct Drive 3HP Air Compressor 50 litre - will this compressor be man enought for the shot balsting?

Has anyone used one of these http://www.acegrit.co.uk/acegrit/gritblaster/page2.html

I also would like to purchase a Gunson gas analizer and Engine Analyser. are they any good.

Any advice on the above would be great.

Just looked at the blaster very similar to the one i had, before some theiving sod nicked it, used to run mine from a 3hp compressor with 150ltr tank, from that i got about 3mins worth of good blasting. i reckon to use one properly you need 2 3hp compressors. The compressor you are looking at has to small a reciever 150ltr would be better, unless you can find an old compressor that is dead, with a large tank and pipe it so that you can fill the compressor tank and the spare tank, it won't be that good you will run out of air to quick. Having said that, you are not using it for something to earn money but a restoration project, so if you blast half a wheel spotless then wait a few mins and go again it will be fine. I used to use kiln dried sand in mine, bit naughty but it was cheap and ment i could do it out side and now worry about loosing the blasting material. It does strip anything to bare metal if you can run it at 90 psi all the time, and will find rust holes very easy and make them much bigger

I m not bothered with the hole finding it will help i want to restore the car once

I would like a bigger reciver but my funds are limited to £200 max realy, i will keep looking around. I know its naughty but a mate use to use an old gas bottle with a safty valve as a second reciver....

The Gunsons emmisions tester is crap, as long as you mean the electronic one. I had one and found the results varied wildly depending on the weather (well, ambient temps).

I only have a colourtune plug/thingy now, seems just as accurate

The ACE grit blaster will work off a 3 hp 14 cfm compressor running flat out. (3 or 2.5mm nozzle). I got more than 3 mins per fill, but it does depend on the grit you use.

I replaced mine with one of the "10 gallon Sandblasters" advertised on ebay, excellent value for money and far superior than the ACE.

Do a search on "Compressors" and "Sandblasting" on here, there's loads of stuff.

Unless the design of the gastester has changed dramatically over the last few years, I'd stick with a colourtune. It might not be as exact as a proper gastester but it'll tell you what each seperate cylinder is doing (very handy for multiple carb setups).

It's quite difficult to use in strong sunlight though...

If your using 90 psi a 14cfm compressor wont keep up with the amount of air your using and it will be running constantly trying to reach the pressure you have set it to , with a 150ltr air tank this will hold a higher reserve of air before the pump starts running but it will take quite a bit longer to reach the 90psi compared to a 50 or 100ltr tank. Swings and roundabouts i suppose.

My Clarke 14 cfm compressor does maintain 90 psi, running continuously.

I've set the cutout to 100 and the pressure settles at 90 under use.
