compressor help.

could anyone tell me if a 3hp single phase motor will drive this pump?

the plate on it is ingersoll rand 4&2 1/2" X2 3/4 type 30

I attached a pic or two of it.

I had planned on fixing this compressor

but after doing a brief check it is seized but the tank seems good, the capacitor had gone on the motor so I got a new one so hopefully that will have sorted that end of the drive.


I hope to mate the above pump to the tank and motor. Hope to keep it single phase as well if possible.

where is the best place to get info for those pumps? like the speed it should go at?

The pulley on the motor is a single belt affair at present so will want swapping to double and I also need to work out the size that I am looking for.

Off the top of my head it's about 650 rpm. I'll check the motor speed and pulley ratio on mine tomorrow.

If your motor is a 2 pole motor like i suspect you would be safe with a 3 1/2" pulley, it all depends at what pressure you want to operate. A recent post on a similar situation to yours http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=36150&page=2

I read through that thread hopefully mine is not too tight I could do with a good single phase compressor.

I will have a look about and see what pulleys I have about that will fit the motor. is there a place that supplies them reasonable if I need one?

tbh 120-150psi would be loads air tools really only need 90psi?? and I very rarely have to blow up a plant trailer tyre that would be as high as I need.

The motor on mine is 1440 rpm and the pulley's are 6" on the motor and 13" on the pump, measured at the base of the groove approx. So that makes the ratio 2.17:1, therefore pump speed is 663 rpm, pretty close to my guess earlier.
You will find pulley's at a motor and bearing supplier, like Brammer etc.

Thats interesting yours having a 13" pulley on the pump, I was watching a 242 on that auction site and asked the seller what was the size`s of the motor and pump pulleys, he replied with 14" pump pulley and 8" motor pulley but he had a 6 pole motor on his. It looks like there are different pump pulleys out there to confuse things further.

Aren't they measured by their total diameter ? I bought an 8" one today,it had 8" stamped on it and it measured 8" across.....that's possibly what is causing some confusion,you're not comparing like with like

Aye could well have been, mine is the same as the one Daz has got 15" OD pump, but a 7" motor which theoretically should give 676 rpm, but measured with a tacho allowing for slip etc spins the pump at 650 rpm just before switching off at 10 bar.

I can work out the wee size now if the pump needs 650rpm.

I was possibly overthinking it !! The ratio would be about the same with the pulley's measured at the overall diameter. That would be about 14" and 6.5" on mine.
