Compressor oil source - 5w50?

Hi folks.

just rebuilt my compressor with a new pump and the manual calls for “fully synthetic 5w50” oil. Which I can’t find anywhere.

It’s a Fiac AB 360 - not sure on the capacity but guessing less than a litre. But about to buy a second unit so seems sensible to buy 5L.

anyone know of any sources?

If any help Comma do a synth motor oil. That grade tends to be a motorsport grade.

I get may oils via ebay from Smith and Allen.

I use 5/40 synth Diesel eng oil in mine.......

If your compressor doesn't reside in a freezing cold warehouse then you can really ignore the first number. 10w50 will be fine.

Mine gets ATF, because there was a drum of it in the garage when I bought the house and I never throw anything away!

was just looking at the spec for 5, w 50 the oil can run and lubricate at a higher temperature than the lower stuff .so on modern compressors they run hot and fast its worth buying. my home made comp runs on any oil as its off air brakes on a bus engine and runs slow

I just watched a you tubes about a barn find Sierra cossie and they had NOS 5w-50 for that, which would make sense. the YB is basically a pinto engine that would be runniong on 20w-50 and a Turbo that would need oil if it were cold.

I can't see the same needs for a compressor. I use SAE 30 clarke compressor oil in my wolf compressor. its usually ar room temp, its not pumped lubrication and it doesn't get that hot. Also motor oil has detergents in it that would not be necessary in a compressor

I agree - it is not much different to a Clarke by the look of it.
People often stress over the choice of oil - surely anything is better than the thick black gunk you often see.

Thanks guys - that’s given me a fair bit of reassurance.

I’ve just placed the order.

I wanted to stick with synthetic (and compressor specific) oil without the detergents seen in engine oil. As soon as I specified synthetic the price shoots up - it was getting silly: between £18 and £45 a litre!

so learning from my experience of the new pump - which was £100 cheaper if ordered from Europe, I did the same with the oil: I got the genuine Fiac stuff, shipped from Italy for £15 a litre and ordered two so I have a spare. Shipping wasn’t too bad at about £9.

sure when I come to change the oil I’ll just use normal stuff from Toolstation, but for the first run I thought I’d treat it: plus it’s nice to send a bit of money over to Italy at the moment. Not sure if their shipping agents are running, but worth the gamble.
