Compressor oil

Well compressor came, with an unmarked bottle of oil. Filled that up and bought another bottle that says 'Non Detergant'. I just noticed in the instructions that it says not to use this?
What oil do you use? and what can I do with the none detergant oil, it was so cheap its not worth sending back.

A marine engineer pal of mine told me to use hydraulic oil, cos it lubricates, and we had a load lying around.
Mind you, he talks a lot of tosh sometimes, so I don't know.
Compressors still ok though!

Some Clarke piston compressors use SAE 30 oil, some SAE 40. On the bottle I have it describes it as motor oil. Costs about £3 per litre. Their Shhhhh range uses synthetic oil at £11 per litre.

If the instructions say "don't use non-detergent oil" presumably they say which oil you should use??

Diesel engine oils tend to be detergent, petrol engine oils don't.

I'd use the oil you've bought in your oilcan, no point in risking expensive machinery.

I have put the oil it comes with into the resovoir, but Im geussing it will need topping up every now and then?
I dont have any oil other then this bottle CLARKE SAE 40. Geuss I will need another type. It didnt say 'for petrol engines' on it on the website, doh!

Can I use this oil for anythings else machinery related? othersie itle just be laying around in the way.

I'd personally just stick it in your oilcan and use it as a general lubricant
I've always got 2 stroke oil lying around that might be a little contaminated, don't wanna risk putting it back into the system of a high performance (and expensive!) engine. So I'll either stick it in the cheap generator or use it in the oil can for lubricating hinges/drawer slides etc in the workshop

Oh yes they do! As the machine gets older you get oil sucked past the piston and they inevitably leak.

There's not much oil in there to start with so I'd check and change oil regularly.
