compressor part help

Hi all i know nothing about compressors but this part appears to be broke could anyone tell me what part it is so i can get a new one please there is no label on the compressor to find out the make all it says is 1970 thanks in advance for any information.

It's probably a start relay, I'd have a look at old freezers and fridges for something similar.

It's a Porter Lancastrian silent compressor, I have the same one. Pretty sure the broken bit is just a terminal block, the lids are long gone off my one as well. Yours is the only other one I've seen so I doubt spares are available You will just have to put it back together as best you can so the live terminals are covered up.

Many thanks how silent is it it was making some ticking noise but not very loud, the part has a hole in it presumable no good, more picture of the part.

Yup definitely the start relay. It's basically a current relay that switches a start winding in When the current in the main winding drops as the motor runs up to speed the relay drops out and disconnects the start winding.

Many thanks ive found some online videos on how to test each part and it looks like they do a universal relay, if all fails and its going to be expensive to put right with what i have would it be possible to convert it to a pump type the air chamber looks a descent size i don't mind spending a few £ on it if it can be made good ?,

I paid £20 for it as a none working unit my intentions was to use it for light work spraying small parts a bit of drilling and grinding on a hobby scale.

Bear in mind the air output of that type of compressor is very low, have a look at the Clarke Shhhhhh range in Machine Mart for an idea of what to expect.
