compressor problem

I have bought a bench top switzer blast cabinet and I am using a friends compressor which is approx 1 month old and hardly used.

It worked fine yesterday but today, it has started tripping the reset button (positioned above the motor in the pic ).

I have the psi set @ 90 coming out of the compressor and into a water trap where it is set to 80psi and I am using a 5mm ceramic tip.

The top aluminium fins get very hot and when I start using the gun, the compressor cuts out instead of kicking in and I have to hit the reset button and wait for it to cool before I use it as it's not my machine.

It seems to be an overheat issue but I wanted to ask incase I am doing something wrong.

the pipe running from the piston area to the tank is approx 22/25mm and is also very hot...you can touch both areas but only for a second

Just had a look at the blast cabinet and they quote 5cfm, so doesn’t seem like a duty issue.

I’ve come across blockages pre and post compression, so I would suggest starting with cleaning the filter, and then checking your reg and filter.

The "free air" flow is 9cfm. In the real world, at pressure, that translates to a lot less. Compressors do run hot, that's why they're finned.

When it reaches pressure and cuts out does it give off a loud hiss ?

The reset buttons can get "weak" I had a trip fail completely and bought a couple of ebay replacements

1st one worked for a few months and started tripping regularly so I swapped it for the other new one and back to working normally

Edit: just voicing a possibility there could obviously be a genuine over current tripping it

My Wolf version of the same compressor would be running constantly with a 5mm tip in a blasting nozzle - and wouldn't be too happy after doing it. Duty cycle isn't that great on them.

Thanks for the replies and apologies for the delayed response, sods law is that the compressor extension lead is being used elsewhere and I have to wait.

The compressor does make a loud hiss when full.

I have a 4mm nozzle to try and I will drop the psi to see if I can find a balance and if it reduces the heat to the compressor.
As it is in another building, I cant hear the compressor running, but I am probably trying to draw too much air.

What has been worrying me is that is is tripping out too easily but thats it doing it's job I suppose. I shall add an update when i can get going again

I managed to use the compressor today for some spraying and it worked fine. I set up the blast cabinet and switched to a 4mm nozzle and the compressor started cutting out again, you are spot on bricol. I will get around to adding a second tank.
