compressor problem

ive just aquired a new compressor its an old motivair one with a broom an wade compressor motor on it ,we wired up the three phase supply i then removed the belts to check which way the motor spins and also turned compressor over by hand to see if i could tell which way that needed to spin to build up pressure but it appears to be buildng up pressure both ways , should it do this?i then put the belts back on and switched it on .it ran for a minute or so and began to slowly build up pressure but then a small amount of smoke appeared from the electric motor so i quickly switched it off. im wondering if i maybe have a stuck valve causing too much pressure on the electric motor any thoughts on this ?

a little bit of smoke might just be rubbish in the motor if not run for a long time

the pump will run either way and build up presure . look at the pump pulley they have fan blades built in for cooling .the air is sucked from outside of the pulley and blown over the pump that will indicate direction . have u checked the links in the motor for running on 440v supply . it may be linked for running on 230- 240v 3 phase . dual voltage motor

Some pullies have an arrow on them to indicate direction of rotation.

It's important to get it right for cooling as BS mentions and also for lubrication.

im sure i have the direction the correct way round going by the blades inside the pulley on the compressor pump like you guys have said they take air onto the pump

did you wire the motor in star or delta? it could be that it needs to be star and you wired delta thus drawing too much current.
