We sell a lot of FIAC air compressors. They're mostly made in Britain (Manchester) and they're proper quality bits of kit. They're not the cheapest on the market but really put a shift in.

GT air sell them new for £309 . Personally I would try to get a deal from GT air say offer £280.?
this one is £200 add collection costs say £20 ... £60 difference and a warranty.
If it panned out like this ... its marginal and I would go new. For the peace of mind and an extra 2 years of life on the tank.

) always tend to have the best pricing on these compressors. Sometimes £50 or more cheaper than Amazon (just checked and it's currently £20 cheaper)...I bought mine from UKHS and it came 48 hours later, no problems at all.

I've had a FIAC for three years now, so not in a position to give a long-term report, but it's given no trouble and is dead reliable so far.
I got it locally as NOS for a good price. I'd certainly buy another if I needed one.

One of my compressors is a fiac. Largeish (as in 1ph, supposedly 13a, but blows 13a fuses).
I bought it used at least a decade back, with a dead start cap. Replaced the cap and it's been fine until the thermal cut out failed a month or so ago (£8 to replace)
So it's been (in my opinion) pretty reliable. Don't know how old it was when I purchased it.
It's a direct drive though and I would not buy a direct drive again (I'm sure fiac make belt drive also)

Just about to pull the trigger on a bigger compressor myself (50L draper storm force isn’t fit for anything but car tyres)
- Ignorant question but can anyone actually tell me why belt driven compressors are considered better than direct drive?
- would that wolf 90L be capable of running a needle gun/air grinder etc? Most of those say they pull about 10cfm. Our air at work is about 7 BAR and that runs them fine
The wolf specs say 14cfm at 10bar so in theory no problem but has anyone got any experience of using heavy air consumers with this one? Maybe I’m expecting too much from a single phase hobby compressor?

Main benefit is that it's much quieter.
I perhaps bought cheap tools but I'll be honest and say that my wolf has been rubbish with grinder type tools.

Thanks, I could go with that but couldn’t tell if there was anything else. Quieter is fine anyway, direct drive makes a hell of a noise.
That’s disappointing... anyone else weigh in on the same?
I was really hoping I would be able to get the odd rattle of a needle scaler and run an air powered sander with a something like that wolf... if I can’t do that then there’s probably little point in me upgrading from the Xmas cracker spec one I have just now

I was using an air die grinder off my FIAC (supposedly 9.5cu ft / min FAD) and it only just kept up with demand. Next time I'll connect the older direct drive unit in parallel with it. Fortunately I don't use much of the heavy demand stuff, but it was a bit of an eye-opener how air-hungry that little tool was.

I have the clarke XET19 ...I think it was about as big as I could run on a 230v supply. Been very happy with it...kept up with the spraying we've done....fills up quick so hardly kicks in and when it did it filled and went off.
Not insanely loud either...I think I measured it at 79db maybe (but double check the spec if this is important). I had big plans to build a sound box for it but it's so quiet I never bothered. My old one was a direct drive...and that was LOUD!
Got rid of the old one because of the noise...actually I wouldn't have minded the noise if it actually achieved some descent air flow but it was a bit hopeless...the tank (150l) was clearly a marketing exercise to lead buyers to believe the pump was sized to the tank!
