Compressor service ?

Hi all, got me a compressor ( Jetair J11 )

Got it home and it fired up and run fine on 240v 13amp, the previous owner sad it blows 13 amp so he wired to the mains with a 16amp.

I had to drain it as there was a a little water in the tank, dirt rust manky water. I drained it and now the drain plug will not seal so i will be getting a new one asap.

Now then

I would like to change the oil in the pump, there is no dipstick but there is about an inch of oil in it.

I think i know the drain plug for it but how much and which oil should i use, i guess its an old compressor. ?

Just remembered, i need a intake filter aswell, what size gauze/foam should i use?

Is it direct drive or belt drive belt drive often have a sight glass

there is usually a red dot behind the sight glass and the oil level should be kept within the red dot

I got through about 6 or 7 fuses before I found one that lasted on my 3hp direct drive

changing the oil will help it run more easily and therefore less likely to blow the fuse

lol that will be it then, i just cleaned it off darn manky it was. for some reason i was looking for a bulb type one.

It indeed it has the red dot oil level is low and dirty so defo needs a service.

So what oil type will be best for an owd thing like this?


I just removed the drain valve and it looks like the end bit has come inside the tank.

My Clarke says fill to the top of the sight glass, the red spot is the minimum, my SIP says fill to the red dot.

I just use decent motor oil i.e. whats left over from doing the car..one plus...it starts even when its 10 below or colder...

I agree as i have just looked back to a chap who asked similar question in 2011 and Brightspark said the same i have some 10/40 so i will stick that in.

Replace the missing filter as well or it won't survive long!

Compressor oil isn't expensive...

Getting the thinnest you can will help it start up, particularly in the cold, and reduce the current required and therefor less likelihood of popping fuses.
