i have a switch on this dakota 2 100 14cfm compressor keeps tripping at 130 psi ish .says 15a on side of switch . i thought motor just spins piston and sees it as a constant load with some kind of one way valve.what could the issue be anyone .also noted oil level is slighly overfilled could this cause extra drag. its not time related more about psi related ..anyone ?

While the motor has one power rating that doesn't mean it always uses thr same and works at the same level.
Im not familuar with the exact way the compressor will works - but as the pressure builds the effort required to push air into the Receiver by the piston may be expected to increase, thus demanding more power (& so more current in Amps) from the electric motor.
It could be as simple as the circuit breaker is failing and is tripping early, rather than any major issue with the motor.
If the drive belt is too tight, then you make the motor work harder too.
The overfill of oil might increase drag also yes, but unlikely to be the issue unless its overfilled quite a bit.

If it’s tripping the thermal overload switch, try running it without the belt, do you have a good electrical supply, ie not using an extension cable, check your run capacitor with a multimeter, after the compressor has been unplugged for 20 minutes The microfarad rating will be stamped on it.
My drill press has started making an odd motor noise a few minutes after starting - I've been thinking I need to test the Caps on it, as they are pretty old now (my old IR compressor too come to that). I have a MM that measures Capacitance (a lot of the less-exotically-priced Pro meters don't).

On my compressor the unloader valve stopped working. It didn't trip but the motor started humming aa it could not re- start to top up the pressure, I killed the power immediately before it tripped or damaged the motor and after asking about it on here was pointed to the unloader valve not unloading the pressure in the pump. Replacing this valve cured the problem.
As the pressure builds in your tank the motor has to work harder to drive the pump. If yours is tripping out at higher pressures the first thing I would check is the supply voltage under load ie when the tank is nearly full. The next thing would be the capacitor(s). Also check how hot the motor gets when it trips.
I'm guessing the 'trip' is a rectangular thing with a small button that pops out when it trips? It's not unknown for them to go faulty & trip too early. Try & measure the current the motor is drawing under load.

First thing to do is check the motor amps just before if trips? If the motor is over-loaded, it may be a mechanical issue. Is the motor running longer than its duty cycle?
Your approx 10cfm compessor may be the culprit, the motor starter may require resetting, the motor run capacitor (if fitted) may be at fault or there may be another motor fault. Even filling with the wrong oil viscosity can cause troubles.
Is the pressure gauge reading correctly? Does it ever actually unload?
Age of unit may be a factor not provided. If within warranty, go to the supplier, not fiddle with things.
