Concrete sealing

Evening all!

I'd like a little advice please. I've recently built Mrs RWD a new shed which unlike my recent new workshop, doesn't have a polished concrete floor (well it is only 12' x 6' so I couldn't justify the rental cost of a power float!). The net result of this is that it is dusting up quite badly. I clearly need to seal it but there seem to be a myriad of products out there and to be honest, as it's really not my area of epertise, it's confusing the life out of me!

Can anyone speak from experience and reccommend a good product at a sensible cost? She'd like a grey painted finished appearance and I'm not averse to using two products (a sealer then a paint) if that's what it needs, but obviously a single product that performs both functions would be preferred.

a neighbour finished his with an epoxy based paint that looked fantastic, but I couldn’t afford it…

15% sodium silicate syrup in tap water is what I used on my dudty foundry concrete floor and it worked well - I already had the sodium silicate for sand moulding hence the choice. (SS = waterglass)

Hi, Same as Chippie, I used The Leyland floor paint from Screwfix. It's been down coming up 3 yrs now, I was told to use a 50/50 mix with white spirit as a primer coat then a full strength coat afterwards. It's in the conservatory so not high traffic or heavy use but still looks good.

@Chippie I used this on the floor of my old workshop and garage and found that it didn't last that well. It seemed to flake off and then carry on dusting up. Do I need to seal it first do you think?

A pal of mine did the same with the epoxy and says it's holding up well, but yeah, pricey!

@colnerov I can see how a thinned coat might help as it would be more inclined to soak in a bit.

Ah, so SBR goes on a bit like PVA used to right? only it isn't water soluble.

It looks like it should penetrate quite well and presumably give a pretty decent surface to paint over?

Mate used SBR then a floor paint it came off in sheets.
A good 2 pack floor paint
Blackfriars or Leyland

It looks like it should penetrate quite well and presumably give a pretty decent surface to paint over?

dont bother with paint after the concrete looks sexy IMO i did a couple of diluted coats then a neat coat still great now i can get pics i u like although there may be some on this site I posted

I was going to use this when my garage gets built.I've not used it before but it doesn't seem too pricey.They do other colours.

2K Epoxy Floor Paint RAL Colours Yellows (1000's) Select Colour Hardener Inc. | eBay

(Hardener Incuded). The paint needs to be mixed 4:1 with the hardener (included). Once mixed the product can be sprayed, rolled or brushed. 2K hardener contains iso-cyanate which is toxic. 1 Litre Paint + 0.25 litre Hardener.

yep just give it the one coat of sbr if your painting it as well it will soak well in . if u second coat it it will stop wettish on top

Wickes grey garage floor paint, thinned down so it really soaks into the pores. That's what I used on my previous garage build where I had simply tamped the concrete down with a timber beam, no attempt at smoothing. Every time I brushed it powder and dust came off. The paint cured that.

yes that will do it, it comes in 5L tubs 5L will be loads for your 6m2 floor.
