connecting two tanks up

my 50 litre direct drive compressor as blown up and i can get a 24 litre direct drive one cheap can i connect the two tanks up and will it work

It will work as storage but will take 3 times longer to get to pressure than the 24 litre alone causing more wear on the motor at one hit.

Make sure you don't exceed the safe working pressure of the lowest rated tank.

On the other hand the motor will rest for longer periods between operating periods.

You could always put a valve between the two tanks, this would give more rapid building of pressure when being used on light consumption air tools etc only using the 24litre tank and a longer running time when using air hungry tools with both tanks linked.
