coolant pump wiring help

Hi i have a thread already regarding my three phase lathe converting to single phase i have on order a inverter and control box so hopefully thats that part sorted.

My next issue is the coolant pump and the light but i would rather get the coolant pump sorted first.

I am wanting to run the coolant pump separate on a switch so basically plug it into the wall and turn it on and off via a little switch??

Can this be done with the pump been three phase?

Any help would be great

the easiest way is to use a capacitor to make a phantom phase. its a 440 motor so it will need to be in delta, which it looks like.
Wire the Live and Neutral to a post eash then wire the capacitor between the live post and thitd post.
to switch it i'd use a double pole switch, switching both the live and neutral.

you have said it to technical for me i have never done it before so its all new
i have posted what i think the wires i haven't a clue and most probably wrong

I think that it's wired in star, which would be correct for a 440V machine. I'm afraid it's going to be a little more complicated than just running it from a plug. If you were more electrics-savvy then you might be able to adapt it, but I think your best option is going to be either to find a single phase suds pump or adapt some other cheapo pump to do the job.

This chap is on the Boxford forum and sells a lot of stuff. May be able to offer a cheapish single phase pump that you can adapt. Drop him a mail if you get desperate.

I tell you what nothing on this lathe up to now has been easy the guy who came down did say something about a capacitor if that makes sense???

It does, but for that to work you need to have the motor configured for 240V 3-phase. This means that there should be 6 wires coming from inside the motor, I can only see three. Correct me if I'm wrong but that's how it looks from the picture. If that is the case then you need to dismantle the motor, find the 'Star point', which is where the three ends of the windings are connected inside, then separate them and bring them all out into the open. From what you've said I think this may be more than you'd be willing or happy to attempt.

I got a suds pump motor of ebay 1/8HP 1PH for my boxford for about £60

I think one of the winding wires is hidden under the brown. For star I'd expect the 3 tails to be connected to the spare post ( its in the bottom left under the "Earth" word) to act as the centre of the star.

That's possible Rik. Do you have a multi-meter Powderblast? If so, set it to a resistance range, say a few hundred Ohms, and measure from any of the other three posts to the screw that Rik has mentioned. If there's a reading then the modification shouldn't be too difficult.

That's possible Rik. Do you have a multi-meter Powderblast? If so, set it to a resistance range, say a few hundred Ohms, and measure from any of the other three posts to the screw that Rik has mentioned. If there's a reading then the modification shouldn't be too difficult.

I will have alook and see what happens hopefully it can be converted i should also get the inverter tomorrow so that should be fun

I've assumed that the other ends of the windings are on the underneath of the posts. if they are just the free wnds and the other ends are hard wired togetherr it won't work.

you can see the 3rd winding wire and the 4th post on the earlier pics. unfortunately the tails look too short to join on the 4th post. so a second closer look seems to indicate a no as well as it just saying 440 on the data plate

does the plate come off ? so you can see behind it ?

Thats just Y not delta so its 440V only

i have sent him a message but he says that it should work on pumps that are 415v only??

Submersible pond pumps work very well on coolant
Cheap as well

heres a vid of it does is sound about right??? sounds ok but after a while of tuning it dies off then picks back up

yeah its working but after awhile there is a dip in power if you view the video you will see what i mean??
