Y'all seem to get a kick out of artistic metalwork, so, cormorant sculpture in progress...
Profile and face on outlines drawn up with my client to the posture they want. Head will actually be turned but I'm not that good at drawing. Sample piece at the bottom.
Frame now complete and ready to move onto the body feathers & wings. Frame made from 8mm round, body feathers will appear sheet like made from strips of 3mm flat bar welded side by side & ground back flush. Tail & wing feathers willl be strips of either 16 x 3mm or 20 x 3mm - as per the bottom of the sample piece. Being left to rust as per client's request.

Looks like a good start.
It is going to be one tough old bird, but I always find that weight and solidity add to the finished result. Keep us posted

Cheers. It's going to be perched (welded) slightly leaning forward on a horizontal length of light guage railway track which itself will be welded on top of a vertical length of track which is going into the ground in their garden.

About 70% done. Still got to do the tail feathers, eyes, spread wings, feet & base.

Getting there...
Can't wait to get my MIG and running, stick welding this sort of thing is a pain in the genitals.

Client doesn't want it to have eyes so just a clean up / final tweaks & it's done & ready for proper photos.

Fabulous, that is the best feathered bird I have seen. it must the use of heavier steel than usual for the feathers and the shaping work. The feet are also great.
What will the final finish be?

Wow thanks. It's my 2nd sculpture so new ground to me. The feathers were from 25 x 3mm & 20 x 3mm. They just want it to rust.

Look up Leigh Dyer's work. He's an experienced metal sculptor down in Hastings. He stuff is nuts, top guy too. "In Curva" studios.
