Cornflour in paint to take down the gloss?

Hi,I've just been watching American Restoration (TV show) and the top tip to lose the shine from gloss paint was to mix cornstarch (cornflour in Blighty) into the paint before spraying.

Sounds a bit out there to me - anyone ever tried it?

If you do it like I did (ages ago, mind! Honest!) it won't have any shine to it anyway.
But I was young, and did it in a lay-by at the side of the road.

PS - I didn't use cornflour, but the road wasn't as quiet as it seemed before I got the rattle cans out!

You would be better off with matting agent

I'm just imagining looking at it in a few months and noticing you've got weevils in the paintwork

Just use celly and it will fade anyway.

the old addage was talc. matting agent is now available.

Talcum powder sounds like a much better idea,since it's fairly cheap & not organic - anyone know how much to add to the paint to get a satin finish?

Matting agent is a far better way of doing it, for a satin job don't go over 50%, 35% should give a nice look.
Satin paint jobs are just about the hardest to get right, paint area needs to be like a operating theatre as you can't nenib or polish out any defects.
If you drive up park lane in London you will see lots of satin jobs on high end cars but they are all vinyl wrapped, seems to be the in thing to do to your Lamborghini these days

Yes if you want it really matt, sprays just like normal paint, if you want satin just do a test at 20-25% to start with

remember you cant fix runs , orange peel , flys stuck in the paint etc

and it will show up somewhat if you dont spray evenly , heavy streaks will have more sheen than dry patches
