Coronet Lathe motor Replacement.

As some of you know the above lather motor has failed.
Cracked casing.
Not sure how that happened, but it has.

The motor details are.

Hoover AC Motor.
HP. 1/2
Rating. Cont.
Type. 129G.B.F.
Volts. 230/240.
Cycles. 50.
Phase. 1.
Amps.3.39.
RPM. 1425.
No. 7.29308

The O/P shaft is 0.5" Dia and 1.5" long, with a machine flat to tighten a grub screw on to.

Does anyone know of a place local to Wiltshire who could supply a suitable replacement?

I may have one i took off my Dore Westbury. its sounds about right. I'll post the full details when I'm next at the w'shop

I replaced mine with a 3ph and VFD. I had to modify the mounts, but that's why i have a w'shop.

Those old Hoover motors are relatively small, is there room to replace it with a physically larger modern motor?
Just seen rikrobson may have a better solution.

True, I was thinking of the Myford 1/2 hp Hoover motors which were tiny. Just about any motor would do you providing it is 1400 rpm ish with a 1/2 inch shaft or have the pulley bored out to suit a metric sized motor.
I have an old 2 pole motor here which needs a new home but being 2 pole it is 3600 rpm so no good to either you or me.
Note to self: put motor in the sales section.

I have contacted a few places for a motor, not cheep.
£250 to £350.

Machine Mart has a similar motor for under £100.
But the 3 step pulley will need work.

But early days yet.

One of your mates has a metal lathe you could open out the pulley easily, key way is doable too.

even if you don't cut a keyway you can drill and tap the pulley and tighten with grub screws

When I upgraded my motor I had to drill out the pulleyand broach a new keyway

I guess so, it is the one that came attached to the Drummond, poor little thing almost took off when it was ran with a spindle speed of around 1500 rpm .

One supplier said a grub screw would not grip on the round and it needed a shaft with a flat spot.

In the absence of a milling machine, that's what angle grinders can be made to do.....

Does your motor sit in a separate cradle with resilient collars (shock absorbing) on the ends of the motor? I'm sure I've seen one or two kicking around my garage. You would have to use your old collars I expect. They prise off. I'll check tomorrow. Whereabouts are you?

that's easy enough to file a flat on the motor shaft its not rocket science I have a few machines with flats and grubscrews that take some stick my 3hp compressor is one . just thought on the myford countershaft only has a flat on the shaft with a grubscrew in the pulley

My Southbend has two cone point grub screws that poke into divots on the countershaft too. Lasted since 1943.

Just to add I had on old plain bearing motor that was turning fine when I got it. I took the end bell off to clean out all the crud and free up the centrifugal switch and when I put the enc back on it wouldn't turn. I had to adjust the tension on the tie-rods to get it to turn freely. Half a turn on the wrong nut and it wouldn't budge.
