i'm making some signs & benches for a picnic area ,they;re being sited at the highest point of the "heads of the valleys" road,i'm using 10mm corten plate [weathering steel] & wondering if anyone has welded this steel with the matching corten filler wire as i believe its available,i'm not however ,-as i rarely use this steel -so just curious & interested how it runs.

I have a job coming up with the rusty stuff soon aswell-6mm for me though. I've half decided to tig it, to try and pull as much cor-ten into the pool as possible.
Either that or set the welder up to spray and lay a fat slug down.....decisions, decisions. I'm putting off till I have to do it but keenly await ideas. How much is a roll of wire? we could go halfers if its not silly.

I have butt welds in my stuff. Sure the mig weld will rust, but will a 400mm seam show as a line in years to come?

The rules for Corten are
under 12mm and welded in a single pass........mild steel is acceptable (7018 or SG2 MIG)
over 12mm or multi-pass welds.......use a "matching" 0.5Ni / 0.5Cu steel or a 2.5% Ni steel
Excessive heat inputs such as with SAW and the copper bearing weld metals can crack
As an aside the Ni / Cu alloyed weld metals are often thought to flow better than mild steel.

I can't tell you how much I hate the ubiquitous corten sculptures that litter the landscape.
I just have though.

im constantly told (by her indoors) thats what art should do.........create a reaction..........doesnt matter if its a good one or a bad one its stimulated the mind

There's a corten statue on top of the martello tower in Albrough made by the same artist as that. It looks identical to the one in sardine's picture and I think I agree with him.

Aye, its good for use in the garden as it saves galving things like edgings and planters that might come back from the galvanisers a bit different than they went; but for sculpture I feel it must be contrasted in some way, either stainless or the likes. Currently thinking up a sculpture for a sensory garden in a school. £400 quid is the budget. Might be where my corten offcuts end up...
