Coupling latch spring

How do this spring fit?
I have no patience with annoying fiddly jobs.

Is there a hole in the casting the pin of the spring drops in to provide resistance?

It was 2 years ago. Only way I could get the gaiter on.

Yes there is a tiny hole straight down.

Sounds like you've sussed it - the pin part into the hole, bolt through the coil, the loop wedged under the lower edge of the clip, so the loop is horizontal.
