Coventry climax forklift parts

Hi
I have the above forklift and the steering box is gone, the wheel turns a three quarters turn before it grips. The steering box has to be rebuilt. Where would I get a kit or what parts do I need? I haven't opened it up yet.

Coventry Climax is now owned by Kalmar. Although I wouldn't have thought that spares are still available. What age is it? There should be a spec plate on it with the date of manufacture. (If you haven't got one, sorry, It's illegal). Maybe drop a line to the national forklift museum and see if Jim Bradley can help.

Couldn't say whether these people might help, probably best to open up the steering box first, with play such as you suggest the worn components would I thought be obvious, then maybe drop them an email?

I drove one of those in the 70s and the steering wasn't that good then.

I was quoted £400 by an outfit in London to rebuild the manual steering box on my antique van.....
that was 20 odd yeas ago.....and the warranty was 1 year ..they said then it will need redoing again....
blah blah.....
so modded the column and fitted a power steering box off a Toy /Hi-lux....£60 no brainer...

I doubt it not have a spec plate, will be much of a problem in Ireland, the Irish seem to have a relax way of life, anyway it looks like a farm type building in the background so that'll be even more relaxed.

I thought these were manual and not power steering

Just curious as to why it’s illegal. My fork lift has a spec plate but it doesn’t show date of manufacture. It has an engineering inspection every year and hasn't been noted as a defect by either of the companies that did the inspection for my insurance company

Don't know why its Illegal. That's just what My FLT trainer told me when I passed in 1985 and reinforced by different trainers on subsequent refreshers up until the present day

Manual steering boxes were Burman, and had recirculating ball worm wheels, which had a habit of bending the tube they were supposed to "re-circulate" through leading to escaped balls. That looks like it is a big diesel, 70DA or bigger, they had a power steering box, ZF I think, we used to buy a new one if they went wrong, which wasn't often.

Hope your all sorted now, don't wory about identification plate, lots are lost on old fork lifts & it is not illegal to have lost the plate, on my forklift it is a manual box with power stearing asist ram fitted, worked very well, I lost most of steering lock on one side & steering wheel moved up & down an inch or two, the ball bearings in the top bearing wore out, I have just orderd 30 of 3/8 hardened ball bearings of the internet about 30p each including postage & am hoping this will fix it, the bearing seat on the worm is badly worn but am hoping it will go on a few more years with new ball bearings, if not I will fit a thrust bearing then a ordinary ball bearing above it.

I fitted a BMW steering box to my 1950's dumper truck, dumper steering boxes are usually rubbish due to poor maintenance and the steering wheel boss acting as a funnel for any passing rain that then goes down the tube into the box...
