crack repair 7018 LH

hya guys just a update on some of my welding skills repair on a grab arm hey this is all practice what you guys think

i used a thermal arc welder 175e 140-130 amps 2 hot start/ arc force or what ever its called and 3.2 7018 low hydrogen nexuas rods

hope you guys feel im improving as a stick

I'm only a beginner, however to me the first ones look nice, but the last one looks like there's very little penetration. Is it filling a crack, and then another couple of welds over the top to build up thickness maybe?

there was no crack there after closer inspection dads marking marked hair line cracks in the paint too

1st pics-not perfection but looks like it will do what it needs to so should be good-let the test of time be the judge. not all that easy going round small circles like this.
2nd pics-cant tell what is going on here but it dont look great

Not the best really. Hard to judge the scale, but they look fairly small welds given the size of the arm and the forces that i guess will be on it. The look quite cold.

Have a look at the photos in Tino's album...something to aim for!

I think the runs look quite good but let down a little by the stop starts. Keep working on maintaining your travel speed to keep the width of the run consistent. Pic No.2 looks good Pic No.3 has two starts back to back, I would try to avoid that by back stepping the runs (e.g. start at 12 o'clock stop at ten past, start at ten to twelve, stop on the start at 12 o'clock, start at twenty to twelve, stop on the start at ten to etc.) In Pic No.4 there is a little porosity at the start of one run, you could avoid that by using a run on plate. Hold or tack a plate on the edge of the job strike up on that, then when the rod is running nice run onto the job knock the plate off when your done. I usually run from the outside inward to leave the end crater of the weld away from the point of maximum stress, because you can get crater cracking. To try and avoid crater cracks I spot the end of my welds, meaning fill the end crater. When you stop welding allow the weld to start to cool then re strike in the crater to fill it. I think you are doing great keep it up.
