Cracks in Stonechip

Hello there,

I have applied a 2nd coating of stonechip onto the arches of my Mini and it has started to crack around the areas where I seam sealed beneath.

What can I do to rectify this?

Can I just apply a cellulose finish on top of it, then followed with a coating of Waxoyl?

Please dont tell me that I have to remove the stone chip as it is a right pain!

how long did you leave the seam sealer before applying the stone chip sounds like it hadnt cured properly.
i think you may get away with giving the stonechip a light flatting and re coat it when the seam sealer has cured properly

It was left for a good 3 -4 weeks after the seam sealer before I applied the first coat of stonechip and then approx 2 weeks after that I applied the 2nd coat.

Could I not either brush stone chip into the cracks or apply some cellulose thinners to the stonechip crack and (try to) squash it closed, the latter may sound crap but could it work?

seems strange it should crack then
you could try with a brush but it may spoil the finish you could also try a few coats of high build primer sounds like the stonechip has shrunk

I applied anti stone chip to the wheel arches of my car, over well cured polyurethane sealant (2 weeks). It took about three weeks to fully dry over the sealant, the manufacturers said I shoiuld have overpainted with primer first.

If it's just cracked along a corner, abrade with 120's and run over it carefully with a small brush, if it's in a corner and your overpainting anyway, you'll never see it. It is a git to rub down, wet or dry!

They don't all contain the same solvent, so be careful with thinners. Starchem seems to thin/clean up with cellulose, Roberlo silltex 800 appears to be alcohol based (and much faster drying). Both overpaintable with celly.

This could be the solvent in the stonechip paint re-activating what is underneath (in this case seam sealer). Try dusting on a few coats of anti stone chip over the areas of the cracks. I.E. apply the coating with the gun further away from the surface and don't open the trigger as much. You will then get a drier application and this may stick without getting too wet and re-actvating the lower layer.

I applied stone chip to the underside of my Mini. I then applied a second coat but this was a different manufacturer and I laid it on quite thick. It cratered like a dried up mud pool. It was awful, so I scraped it off, wiped it down with thinners, and when it had hardened off I reapplied the stonechip.

I think the newer stonechip reactivated the first coat.

OK since. Then I over painted with the stonechip with the gloss.

Making mistakes is a good way to learn

I must now everything there is to know by now.. :-)
