Crane scales

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience of crane scales? I'm looking for something to measure loads up to 300kg with 0.1kg resolution. In general, most look very, very similar as though they all came out of the same factory. However branded models come in at about £70, unbranded at about £25.

Is there anything to be had by buying a branded model from a reputable company, or do you think I'm just paying for the name only? Steinberg models seem to come up a lot.

I have used the same scale for about three years now, no problems.

Did you stump up for the branded Steinberg one or get one of the unbranded ones? Can't tell from the pic.

Applying a known tension to a bicycle spoke in order to calibrate a tensiometer.

Interesting - I made a jig for a local wheel builder to use to calibrate his tension meter a while ago. Can't remember what his scales where though - but they weren't a make I recognised. I have never bothered with calibrating my Park Tool spoke tension meter but when I made the jig we tested his and mine together and they came out about the same.

I found some pictures of the one I made. I think the bolt at the end opposite to the scale was replaced with some studding and a large wingnut. From memory, I think that was based on a bit of 25 by 25 box. If I did it again I would either use heavier box or 25 by 50 edge-on. I think it was done to the design the guy who asked for it came up with. In answer to your original question - it looks like the scale is an 'unbranded' one.
