Crazy idea of the week - ceramic glazes

Another of those oddball ideas popped into my head after some nagging from SWMBO.

Could ceramic (pottery) glazes be used on metal? Bit of an odd idea I know, but she spotted an "enamel" woodburner on the bay of e and it got me thinking.

Any ideas welcome, thinking if it works it could be quite useful in the sculpture side of things.

you could but try, but I dont think they will handle the thermal movement very well

well Jaguar used to glaze their exhaust manifolds with what looked like ceramic? I'm sure that there are still people doing this?

I've heard multiple coats of Kurust gives a ceramic look to exhaust manifolds - bake between each coat.

Vitreous enamel - I think that was the black finish on Jaguar manifolds many years ago, I think it's also the finish you see on some French stoves.

Helpful, but not quite the line I was thinking of, I should have made more sense in the first place. The woodburner swmbo spotted was just where my train of thought started, not the intended application.

I was thinking of using something like this http://www.bathpotters.co.uk/catego...-trans-gloss-cone-04-06/291/0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0/1 (just the first thing I found that looked vaguely right) And applying it to say stainless, in an arty way, to create something that almost looked like a thin stained glass layer. I`m still not making much sense I dont think.

Ok, as an example. Lets say a square of stainless (or any metal really) for a, er whatever, tea coaster??, could you apply a glaze to it in the same way as pottery, fire it, and it stay on. I`m thinking if it held, it`d leave a glassy transparent finish, but still show and grain/hammering etc in the metal.

Sortof suprised Sir Chunko hasnt tried something similar

definately do-able, the question is ...with the glazes you want... not sure if the ceramic coatings are the same/similar as glaze or not....
