I started doing workshops in metal sculpture a while back, a few people have come along with basic welding experience, some have never seen a welder. We have had some interesting results.
Here are a few.
Adrian and Emma came along last weekend, never even seen a welder.
Emma wanted to make a 'Giant Champagne glass with bubbles', so she did.
Did all the welding and bending herself, I just set up the metal bender.
Adrian wanted to make a 'Curly thing a sort of double helix like DNA'
Job Done.
A while back Dave came along, he has done a bit of welding in the distant past and wanted to have a g at 'A man Trapped in a Ball'
Natalie had done a 'tiny bit of welding' and wanted to make a sculpture based on her line drawing of her daughter doing a cartwheel.
I confess to having been stunned by the work being turned out. I was initially planning on having a few small projects as technical exercises. This is much more exciting for all parties involved. Also giving me some ideas to go away and think about.
This year I have had 5 or 6 whole weekends of this booked. In a couple of weeks I have a family of four coming for a weekend.
I was at first expecting it to be single days but most people seem to be making weekend breaks of it and enjoying Herefordshire as well as getting a quality souvenir. I feel very fortunate to have tapped into a trend I never even knew about. It sees that folk are keen to escape from computers and keyboards and try their hand at manual skills.
