Cut off wheel - random operation

I bought a cut off wheel from Aldi the last time they did a run on air tools. Now I wasnt expecting anything it was £6.99 so no loss if its pap.

Seems it is pap ... tried to use it the other day and 1 min it spins up and another it just blasts air out of the bottom of it.

Just wondering if anyone might know whats causing this, just on the possibility I can pull it apart and fix it before I confine it to the bin.

Sounds very much like the vanes in the rotor are sticking, Try a quick squirt of WD40 or similar into the tool inlet before connecting the air line, If this gets it going follow up with a few drops of good quality light machine oil. or even better proper air tool lubricant. and remember to give it a few drops on a regular basis,

I've given mine some welly over the past few weeks.

It will stall when the pressure is low and it's worseif you don't keep it lubricated.

but then it does have oil daily on it so you can't complain if you don't look after it!!!

apart from that its absolutely fine

Its lubed - poured some air line oil down it before I used it. I was trying to run it at around 100psi but nothing.

Literally havent used it since buying it so maybe its just a bit tight? Will drown it in lube and see if they free's it up. Once it does work it runs fine - its just not all the time.

Mine was doing the same thing. Undid the big nut at the spindle end and removed the guardand nut. I then pulled the whole motor assembly out in one piece. I washed out the casing and worked a load of WD40 into the motor to flush the bearings and vanes then carefully refited it making sure the peg was in the correct place. It took several goes to get it to run smothe but its ok now.

It only needs 3 or 4 drops of airline oil, if you drown it you will end up with a hydraulic motor!.
After you've lubed it spin it up for a minute or so, if it stalls start the wheel on a bit of wood (DO NOT use your hand) to get it turning.
If all else fails, strip and clean as above.

My DA does the same. I think its because I used 3 in 1 oil to start with because I didn't have any proper air motor oil (now resolved!) and its sort of congealed in the motor. Think it just needs a good strip and clean and some proper lube.

a good dosing of wd 40 normaly sorts em out without stripping :then a few drops of 3 in one oill before use then a few drops when finished and a quick run . that makes sure theres no moisture left in the bearings and rotor

Please no 3-in-1, it dries like varnish that stuff! Any straight monograde, engine oil, or stuff sold as airtool lube if you are feeling rich.

hey i had a very similar problem when i would go to startthe tool up nothing!!!same as which you describe it wasnt actually the tool i was using it was the quick release connector for some reason or other it wasnt passing air through it and it was new quick release connectors i bought from screwfix. try another tool on it just to be sure it is the cut off disc tool and not quick release connector.

slightly off topic but
when i was young i worked at a caravan manufacturer one day i was bored so i went across to one guys bench unplugged his air screwdriver and placed a countersunk screw into the male connector and plugged it back in took him ages to workout why he had no air

How much air have you got (compressor output)? The number of those wheels that must lie around garages, unused...

I bought one yrs ago with me first comp, which just wasn't man enough for it really. Mate also had one and nor would his (quite decent comp too). Later, my bigger comp would power it, but found it pretty pointless really - fleabayed it.

I have a similar issue with my Aldi air drill, often I have to switch it to reverse, flick the trigger to make it move, then switch it back to the correct direction to drill. I will have a go at some of the above, thanks for the suggestions. Or maybe I'll just send it back under warranty and get another one. I haven't seen the same problem with my cut-off tool.
