Cutting Aluminium with grinder

Hi All,

what type of cutting disk are you guys using to cut aluminium, I tried with a stainless steel cutting disk but stopped straight away as it was dragging, felt like it would break.

I was told during my abrasive wheel training 20 years ago that you cut soft metal with a hard disk and cut hard metal with a soft disk? ( thin cutting disks went around then).

Not on an abrasive disc boss.

Main ally I cut is tile trim.
Wizz through it with the tile saw usually. Bad I know. Round stock my donkeysaw doesnt complain.

Same brand discs here. Sold them for years without any complaints so they must do the job; they don't clog on Aluminium as a standard disc does.

I have heard of folks using a stone cutting disc and WD40 for lube.

I have some of those Dronco discs work well. But also cut ali with a wood cutting bandsaw, with out issue, this chunk was cut from a block of 6082 roughly the size of a breeze block.

Isn't using Bee's wax the trick, for grinding alloy.

I use a Rage S3 chop saw to cut aluminium. Gives clean cuts and no problem with the aluminium melting onto the blade.

Have used stone cutting discs to cut aluminium. But recently have used 1mm inox but only through approx 5 mm plate

You chopping up the bits I gave you? We use 1mm slitting disks and don't try and bury it into the piece otherwise it will feel like it's getting grabby.

I have allso inox discs but just for cutting chequer plate and have used the rage circular saw on odd occasions

Yes, when it grabs it feels like the blade is about to shatter..

I use ones from Wurth specifically meant for Aluminium as they do cut freer than the usual Tyrolit ones I use for stainless. Having said that the stainless ones do cut fine, just a bit slower and throw up more of a rag.
