I thought someone on here may know the answer.
I'm getting down to the nitty gritty of the move, and one of the last things to come out of the container will be the big oak beam. It's about a foot square and 16 1/2 feet long, I know for a certainty that it's at least 250 years old as that's how long it was in the house as a bresummer. I've offered it around but no one wants it, or they do but don't have any way to transport it and neither do I.
To clear the container it will sadly have to be cut in half, which seems a shame but that's the way it's got to be. That leaves the question of what to do with it, and the only thing I can think of at the moment is to cut the two halves length ways so it ends up as four 6" by 12", 8' long beams. I can then them for a bench in the garden and/or similar stuff.
My question then is, can oak that old be cut like that without eating blades? I'm thinking if it's possible I could ring round some timber places to see if they can run it through one of those huge band saw they have.
