Hi, what is the minimum required amount of cubic feet per minute required for a DA Sander? Iv been told it's around 12 CFM? Thanks

You need to sort your compressor first...
A normal b&q type compressor will do it, not too small obviously, failing that just have a quick break every time the motor kicks in...

My house is fine, my tools however are not. What air compressor do you have? Apart from the 3 phase I also have 5CFM tiger 50L compressor. Managed to sand car panels with it, spray 2K primer and basecoat and even take hard to remove wheel nuts. But the DA Sander loses its power due to the tank not being filled quick enough. I need a better compressor that can work off 240v.

I don't think it's just about the tank size but the CFM rate. I might get the 14 CFM compressor?

gave up on air DA sanders years ago......cost to much in the noise department, electricand gen wear n tear......

I sanded with a 5 CFM and it eventually did the job of removing the crud but thank god the compressor is one of them oil free ones. Anyhow people in here talking about electric Sanders reminded me that I have one in the shed with 5 speed. I will try it out tommorow with 40 grit on a panel that I know my air tool would take the entire lockdown to shift.

Yep, you are not wrong and it was this post that reminded me that I have an electric sander in the shed. Hopefully this shifts the crud to bare metal faster than the Tasmanian devil. Thanks

To get around the horrendously low CFM I had from one of my cheap old compressors I bought a second hand 100L vertical tank for scrap money and fitted a couple quick connectors (And a non return valve) to it. If I was going to be doing something air hungry I'd connect that in series with the little compressor I had and left it filling for 30/40 minutes before I did anything. The compresor had a thermal cutout that would kick in after a while, But would wake back up once it had cooled down again. With my DA I'd get about 5 to 10 minutes before the tank was so low that there wasn't much point continuing, So I'd go do something else for half and hour while the tank re-pressurised.
Not an ideal solution, But money was tight and it was the best I could do at the time.
Now I've got a couple of electric sanders. Less noise and always ready to plug in and use (rather than waiting 5 to 10 for the compressor to get up to pressure).
Mums got that old tank now. I chopped off the end and attacked the bottom 1/4 of it with a hole saw. As a garden waste incinerator it's already lasted 5 times longer than any of the pressed steel dustbin types she used to buy and needed to replace every year.

Go electric.
I have a Mirka 250watt DA sander and it's miles better than the 6inch air sander which uses more air then a 3hp compressor can provide.
I like air tools but only if there is no good alternative (spray gun) are short use (impact gun) or the tool needs to be small (die grinder)
Otherwise electric, it's far more efficient.

Lovely and it's Makita. If it was another brand I wouldn't risk 90 squids. I got an Orbital sander with 5 speed and it's absolutely unbelievably dreadfully crap.

I've got an air mirka. 650 or somthing.
Got it on a 14cfm compressor and it works fine.
Curiously I used to run it unregulated, but now plug it into the regulator and it seems to run just as well but use less air.
(I don't have any numbers for you though, in afraid)

Well i am moving in that direction in getting a 14 cfm 150L but i have now manged to get that last bit of learning i needed from my 5 cfm 50L compressor. Iv gone against everything from the recommended cfm for my spray gun and DA sander and produced results that would be called show room stuff. My journey from the air compressor is now slowly coming to an end although there is always still room for more learning and mastery but iv learnt the basics in what i needed from a 5 cfm air compressor. I am now trying to understand the science behind the Mig.
