Damaged Morse Taper Tang Repairs?

Hi folks,

I've a reasonable collection of MT drills, a small selection have damaged/twisted tangs, is it possible to weld and dress them back to something resembling a tang?

I know the taper part is generally softer than the drill part but is it still hss?

Definitely. My first attempt at repairing the tang on an Archer tapping head. Not perfect but it's a magnitude better than when I started out.

Build it up with mig, it’ll be fine. You need to work out why your snapping tangs though, the drill shouldn’t be driven off the tang so either the drill taper isn’t particularly good or you’ve got damage in the female bit.

There are techniques that can improve the grip in a morse taper such as gently warming the taper sleeve and shrinking in onto the drill (this works incredibly well on borderline / crossover drills where the taper should ideally be the next one up, or large drills that have had the taper turned down to the next size)

I've built them up with tig before, both to build the tang and also to convert to 3/8ww drawbar fitting. Some of them suffered from contamination, but successfully completed all.

Not my doing. They're ones I've just got from a garage clearance.
