Dangerous tools from the past

Going from another current thread i thought ide start a new one about tools we have used in the past and been lucky to survive or still have our limbs intact.....this is one tool that i hated using every time i got it out,if it jammed there was a very high risk of it snapping your wrist with your hand stuck inside the handle

and then there was these...if they slipped from the slotted screw you had a bloody great scratch across the door or veneer top

Still got a Yanky/Yankee. Still faster than a battery drill, and it never runs out. Although I only ever used it for fitting Radiator brackets, for that reason

Wolf Gut Buster drill and B&D chainsaw - no chain brake!

Exchangeable disk drive head adjusting tool - working less than an inch away from a disk flying round at goodness knows how many RPM.

An old Wolf drill, massive bulbous hand held thing from the 60's I think, loads of power masses of torque and very low speed with taper drill bits.

It was lethal and after it nearly snapped my arm for the 2nd time I sold it, think the shipyard guys used them.

Not so much a tool but the father in laws old wooden extending ladders, there was less flex in a rubber band, it was like working on a trampoline

Got three wolf drills at work! We use one for core drilling no clutch!

My BIL had the same model,he had an electrical buisness and he hired this trainee and sent him out with one of the trained electricians on a house rewire.

The trainee was drilling the joist with it and hit a knot...the silly ****** couldn't let go and was going round in circles dangling from the end of the drill,apparently he got a muscle spasm in his hands and he couldn't release the trigger.

Past and present

OK this is a machine I've just finished re-building dating form the 1940's. Origi nally with open belts and whirling saw blades that would do you a mischief in no time flat:

It's a Dominion Eliot combination woodworker comprising a 24" table saw, a 16" x 9" planer thicknesser and a 20" radial arm saw. In it's original form not at all HSE friendly - here is a brochure:

Wooden ladders - back in about 1978, when I was trying to paint the loose pebbledash on our first house (it rained pebbles every winter and a coat of paint was expected to extend its lif a bit), my well-meaning neighbour pretty much forced me to borrow his antique 14' wooden double ladder.
My experiences using this on my own illustrated to me the benefits of buying a decent alloy pair.

when i served my time as a flat roofer in the early 70's we never had propane instead had these all over the roof....took some getting used too and these days they would be banned within 30 seconds

almost 52 and expelled from school at 14 and either it was youth camp or work so up the ladders i went

wooden ladders and steps are nicer to work off than ally ones as long as there in good condition. only down side is there heavy to move

I have a pair of good quality Wooden ladders that I remember my dad buying around 1980, they below me now, and are as strong as the day he bought them. I don't think you would say same of an ali pair of the same age.
