Darkness of mask? (auto sheild helmet)

Ive aquired a ESAB autosheild helmet which had adjustment from 9 to 13 darkness.

Im using it with a 160amp ESAB Caddy Mig on a range of power, what sort of darkness should i be aiming for.

Clearly the darker the better from eye-protection point of view but lighter allows more visabilty. Whats a normal £10 hand held sheild going to be?

Eye protection is near the same regardless of setting. Use what is most comfortable for you to see,

Probably 9 or 10.

I start at lowest setting and increase till I lose the "flare" in the area where welding

Could go the other way just as easily I guess

I like that.

Sadly however it seems the mask in question had a shot battery so its back to the drawing board (shop) on that one. Although most now appear to be adjustable.
