Conversation in the pub tonight after a few pints.
Could you programming a robot arm to throw a dart at a dart board and hit the exact same spot on the board time and time again?

My argument was that degree of precision in cnc programming would allow for the task to be constantly repeated only being effected by outside variables so if it was in a vacume without any external influence the dart would hit the same hole time and time again.

Is this an interesting question or am I just drunk and looking too much into it??

Yes.

The speed some of the optical analysing software in use these days combined with high speed precision drives you could probably build a machine to track the dart and position a dart board so that anyone could throw a dart and always hit the same mark.

Most modern robots have a repeatability of 0.1mm so providing the same dart was used in an accurate release mechanism the dart should hit the same point every time.

One of the "party tricks" we used to do with a 100kg capacity robot was to fix a sewing needle to the end and pierce an egg, the robot would then carry out a load of moves to it's limits then come back and push the needle into the same hole.

It's only series of movements, the clever bit is designing the recognition (vision system) and handling (end effector) side of things.

The day I see a robot being able to play a perfect 9 dart leg once let alone repeatably will be the day I'll believe it......I've not seen it yet and I don't expect to ever see it happen in my life time but I'll be happy to be proved wrong....

I'll take your word for that... The first and only two videos i watched of that system appeared to show a spray and pray approach rather than a system based on absolute precision. In any case, have you ever seen a robot throw a 9 dart leg??? If it's that easy please show us all it being done...

Nobody can show it being done because it hasn't been done.

The reason that it hasn't been done isn't because it's technically challenging - far from it.

There are actually two reasons it hasn't been done:

It's utterly, completely pointless.
It's difficult to make a robot weigh enough to be considered in the right class for professional darts...

Then I revert to my previous statement I'll believe it when I see it... Until it's been done there's no proof that it's even possible despite what is apparently achievable...?

I agree. This is no more accurate than a human player. Top human players can group darts, what I was looking for was repeatable accuracy as we see in CNC operations so the dart enters the same hole on the board each time.
The robots seem to carry out exactly the same movement each time but the dart lands in a slightly different place. Why?
The machine and board never move the movements and force exerted on the dart don't change so why ?

Very impressive but not as precise or accurate enough to lend any evidence to support the OP theory that a "robot" could account for all the variables and hit the same spot constantly as it would appear it missed its intended target several times albeit not by much. As for providing evidence to show that it's impossible (as things stand) I'll refer you to the same videos posted so far..

Really?

All the variables that actually make a difference are in the player.

There are no other variables that would have a serious effect on something that's indoors, over a distance of a couple of paces, where nothing other than the relative inebriation of the players really changes.

I am simply quoting the OP who, it would seem, has faith in robots to perform the task he had asked about. I have simply offered an alternative theory that the apparent lack of evidence proving otherwise (showing that robots are capable of hitting the same spot constantly) likely means that as things stand it's simply not possible...

Using the 2 videos as proof of impossibility is fundamentally flawed.
Of course it's possible.
