Hi all, a question for the collective wisdom on here. I have a compressor pump and 200l tank. The motor (3hp) died some time back. I have a 2.75hp, 4000rpm, 180v dc treadmill motor. Could I retrofit the dc motor to the compressor and use a controller to set the speed? I’m loathe to spend loads at the mo, as job is uncertain. Thanks in advance.

it might not like starting under load as well
The motors are crazy strong, but I have never tried stalling one.
I put a treadmill motor on my large drill press, and it will twist off a 3/8 drill bit without trying.

The best thing would be to find an old complete treadmill.
That would give you the motor and controller .
The controller boards usually are over $60.
The speed knob usually needs to be turned to zero and than ramped up to the speed you need.
The are several web pages that talk of modifications to use them.
