Was working great, but now theres not even a peep out of the fan. Cant find a wiring diagram, or any place that will look at it. Too good a machine to scrap. Steve (Cumbria/Lancs)

I'm stabbing in the dark without pictures, but the lack of fan suggests either a blown fuse or in the case of the fan being supplied from the transformer, the transformer may be toast. Have you tried other equipment in that socket to check it's still working?

im with penfold its lack of power, start with the easy things if you have a meter test the mains cable so you know power is getting to the machine, then the mains switch.

the fans are usually 240 volts and run as soon as the welder is switched on, no complex circuits involved

The power is getting to the mains switch and past it. I will have another look and report back with detailed pictures.

You're right, it is a well built machine; chunky bits inside. There's nothing obvious leaping out at me as having fried itself. Check the fuse at the bottom of the wirefeed circuit board. Is the fan getting power when the power switch is on? Can you take some more pics, particularly from straight above the contactor(item in pic2 with tubular red resistor on it), also front and rear panels; I'm not clear on how this is wired up yet.

It's a bit grubby inside; a quick skoosh with compressed air or a once over with an old paintbrush and the vacuum would be a good idea.

The 240 volts is getting to the black box in picture 2 ok and the tubular item is a resistor about 20 ohms. Can't figure out what the box itself is or what it does. It sits on the same bracket as the transformer that feeds the control board. If I could get the circuit, or even a manual, it would take me half an hour tops to figure out what the problem is, but can't find one anywhere. Steve.

The box is a contactor(fancy name for a relay, a high current electromagnetic switch), you can get them on Ebay for a few pounds. The contactor pulls in when you pull the trigger, that's what makes the clunk along with the gas solenoid valve.

Looks like a 220V coil on the contactor so it will be switched by another relay, possibly on the PCB?

In that case, I dont think that is the cause of the machine (including fan) of being completely dead.

as the fan runs straight from mains being switched on, i would trace the fan wires and trace their path to the mains supply you will no doubt then find the fault

Is the thermal cutout good? (bottom left of pic 3) stuck on side of thransformer. Should show as a short when metered across it's terminals (with atleast one connector removed) On my welder it controls the power from the low voltage transformer which feeds amoungst other things the main pcb, hence cut out open = no operation of machine!

the fan usually runs to cools the welder, even if the thermal cut out operates

The primary of the transformer that feeds the control board has an open-circuit primary. Confusingly, the fan was dead becasuse it takes 220 volts from a tapping on the primary. Just hope the contactor is ok.

thanks for the advice. but still do not know exactly what contactor to buy. Klockner-moeller is the make but they cant cross reference it and they no longer list this part number.

It will probably have the spec printed on the side; just get a contactor with the same coil voltage and power capacity, the make is irrelevant. Any old one will do as long as it's got a 220/230/240VAC coil and can handle 4kW.
