Deca Mig 416sp

New face here.

Just aquired a well used deca mig 416, (looks like a deca star 180) it works fine but has one snag. The wire feed pinch is very poor and the feed roller does not push the wire constantly and consistently. I tried dismantling the whole assembly and the motor and feed mech have a lot of wear. I tried to modify the feed clamp force with little or no success, new feed roller, still the same. Tried with a little g clamp, and as soon as the wire finds resistance at the weld it will bundle up and tangle, instead of maybe slipping a bit. Its rather annoying.

So my question is can i buy one of the wire feeds in the shop and fit it to my machine?? as finding an original one is going to be rather difficult as its an old machine.

I made a little metal stiffener also and its the same, the problems are with the .6 wire, with the .8 its fine.

Does the roller have two grooves? as it looks on the pic to only have one which if a 0.8 would not grip fully/correctly.
If that is the original spring on the arm then it is far to compressed (I know you may have done this to try and get it to grip but not the best ideal).
If it is bird nesting just BEFORE the rollers rather than just after then you could try a length of metal tube with a small bore and form a chamfer on the front to allow it to get VERY close to the input of the rollers. Failing being able to get suitable tube then maybe a short piece of tube that can fit inside the white/yellow coloured tube, allowing it to go up close to the input.
Can't help with the suitability of say a Clarke feed roller unit but hopefully with the pics you have posted someone may suggest a suitable one that could be used or adapted

Have you tried a new liner, swan neck and tip, if they are worn then the wire will snag as you change the angle of the torch.

Thanks for the replies, drive roller is for a .6 wire so that is excluded.

It will nest just after the roller before entering the liner. I will try changing all the components involved but the tips are new as well, unless i could convert it to a euro torch?? but it looks like too much money for such an old machine.

The drive roller seems to be a little eccentric while working hence the erratic feed, also the bush in the gear box is worn. That why i asked if i could fit a new feed assembly.

If you can make up a bracket like the pic below and try to make the bends nice and sharp (less likley to flex) This should give better support to the drive roller bracket. you may be able to fit your bracket over the top. If you have to run the pressure roller cranked hard down then as soon as there is ANY resistance the wire will buckel instead of it slipping. Is the roller definitely out of round or is it the worn bushes/bearings ?

That is a good idea, but is it worth messing any more with this mechanisim? Its the plastic flexing all over the place, including the tensioner

The drive feed is a little eccentric and its not the roller. I have a little lathe so i can make up a pair of new bushings.

I found the exact replacement parts online from canada but they do not ship to my country............grrrr

The easy way out is i just put in a .8 wire roll and call it good..............but i do have the tendency to make things work like the way they originally did, (bad habit) i cannot help it some times.

Never a good combination, plastic and mechanical pressure.
Just remember if you start to make up replacement bits for it note that the assemble should not be electrically connected to the machine chassis (part of the reasoning behind being made of plastic). Those made of metal have insulating bushes and washers.
