Decent air rachet

I have a Erbauer from Screwfix and it is very bad. I can hold with my finger and thumb and stop rotating!

bought mine off ebay, they get oiled every other day...now 15 years old and working fine.......
they are no-make.......

give ur's a heavy spray with WD or similar, poss the blades are all gumed up....
u get a lot of crxp up the air line.......

i bought mine from aldi 13 years ago and its still going strong. every now and again it jams from lack of lube but some more oil in it usually fixes the issue

I’ve got a real cheap one as part of a set (SIP or something) - they don’t have a great deal of torque compared to an impact gun (assume you’re talking about a 90 degree type air ratchet?) but are good for getting in tighter areas.

It would be worth a strip down before doing anything else, I’d guess it could be a stuck vane or something inside?

1/4, 3/8 or 1/2??

Ac delco are definitely a strong air ratchet. My 1/4 will happily snap/strip m6 bolts,
Blue point is a cracking 1/4 with more controlable power.
3/8 and half I have also in blueprint and is good but not perfect.

I have had 4 sets from screwfix now and each time the ratchet has not even turned the socket just blows air out the side.

This latest kit the ratchet turns the socket but there is no power, I need 1/2".

Thing is the Impact gun is amazing its got loads of power.

Try a Chicago pneumatic, snap on, blue point or Ingersoll Rand if you can. Also any ratchet from the big names tool makers will do you proud. I have mainly snap on ratchets all bought on offers with impact sockets or as a deal together with other hand tools, they work just fine. I oil them every once in a while but don’t get much use lately ! There are decent battery operated ratchets from snap on, milwaukee, etc. I would try one of these as well as you don’t need an air line anymore and Li-Ion batteries do last ages !

If the air just blows out of the exhaust it sounds like a vane is sticking. It’s been a few years since I’ve had one apart but I seem to rememeber they are on a sliding arrangement so the vanes can move in/out. They do need an occasional oiling too like ha been said above.

If your going to use one a lot then it may be worth buying a decent make, but if you already have one then it’s got to be worth a look inside first. My el cheapo one worked just fine for years...

As suggested above a stuck vane or dodgy valve, lube is important but often forgotten about along with water separators.All air tool killers.

I suppose another thing to think about is your air Compressor. I have 2 X 50Ltr Compressors connected together and still my 2 impact guns are not very good ! I often use my 240v electric one which is Brilliant.

We've got a couple of Blue Point/Snap On units, got them secondhand. One is my eldest lads, he got it in a job lot of the air tools for £40 and it also included a Snap On 3/8 impact. The poppet valve on the ratchet wasn't working properly, phoned Snap On and I think the seal and the valve were about £6.

These things can be bought for peanuts if you are not in a rush, my lad bought a Snap On air drill for £1 at the Newbury 4x4 spares day.

Here’s my collection, i have a small blue point and 2x snap on 3/8” drive. The blue point is briliant for getting in tight places, The larger snap in is very powerful and breaks tight bolts with ease...

I use the snap on pistol grip impact a lot when working on engines and have to do repetitive work, it’s well used...the air impact wrench when I have car close to the garage and I can get the air line...
And the big Milwaukee when I cannot use the airline...they all get used properly, no Mickey Mouse tools in my garage !

I have a Clarke 3/8", bought along with the impact gun, air drill and air grinder. Not used the impact, but the rest of the kit has been very usefull. The ratchet has done some good work in tight places.
Note: Bought in around '98, so might be different quality than now.

I bought a different one but same thing I can stop the socket rotating with my fingers!

The proper way to use an air ratchet is break the bolt loose as you would use an normal ratchet then wizz the bolt in/out by the air tool. The snap on ratchet on the right will tear your ligaments if it catches you off guard ! The middle one is more manageable and a lot slender !​

Yes that is what I am expecting from a rachet but the ones I have had wouldnt crack an egg.

I think the compressor is OK the gauge is reading 90 psi and the motor does not come on for a long time, and the impact gun works fine at 90 psi.

What is yor snap on rated at for the ft/ibs?

The ones I have had are like 45-50 ft/ilbs.
