Decent budget 6013

looking for a decent 2.5mm and 3.2mm 6013 at a decent price (if that exists)

Used to use fincord but I had access to them really cheap buying them from the stores in work at a huge discount, think I was paying around 6 quid for 5kg with employee discount.

Don't have that facility anymore so looking for a new rod. Not looking for the best rod in the world as I'm far from the best welder in the world. Most of my stuff is sticking door hinges on wood burners and fixing gates.

Currently using my fathers ancient buzz box but moving back to an inverter again soon

Ive been using some bohler aws 6013 that I got from boc a few weeks ago and they are good. Only paid about 15 quid for a box. Ideal for general fabrication. Not as smooth as fincords but perfectly OK.

£15 seems reasonable. Have seen some murex rods at £25 a box but don't want to pay that much for puttering around with gas bottle wood burners

Siftrode are ok? I can get them cheap enough but thought they were fairly low quality like super 6 rods?

We'll have just ordered some siftrode rods from eBay so will give them a try and see what they are like.

Aways got on with Esab or Oerlikon have found cheap rods are like lucky dip you may get a good prize but mostly rubbish

I have used both and the INE rods are easier to re-strike and the slag peels off itself if you get the amps exactly right!

When I mean I have used both, I mean I have I have laid down 100 of kilos of them!

I have used Bohler aws in the past, till my supplier gave me some INE rods to try! Never looked back!


(Oh... Nothing wrong with a buzz-box! I have inverters as well, but still lay kilos of rods with a buzz-box)

I bought a carton of 2.5 6013's the other day. They were the local suppliers own brand, which are something else relabled. I was wary as they were half the cost of fincords, but are fine, especially for general messing around.

Can I ask a question on 6013 rods.

At home I tend to run what the nearest shop has and its Murex E6013 can not remember what they cost but would say around £14 to £17 for 5 Kg. At College I was given ESAB OK 46.30 which again are E6013 rods. The boxes tend to suggest that Murex and ESAB is the same group?

I found that the Murex rods have a smoother appearance then the ESAB which had a more defined ripple. It could be the difference in welding machines ,but I really found the ESAB hard to start and restart , any clues to what could cause these two differences?

R-tech Tig/ARC at Home, and a Lincoln Electric, or Thermal Arc (was red'ish) at college.

I always used the INE blue or superblue as the benchmark. In my opinion they are the best 6013 rod, however, you need to realise that penetration isnt good..........but everything else is

I will do if I remember, the grey cells are getting a bit dull, would help if I could remember the machine make/model, I could have a look for the user manual. Small no more then about 250mm high, plastic hinged see though plate over the controls so you could only get at the current dial, pressed it and it showed other settings.

Got to go to a supplers this morning will ask if the have the ESAB in.

Murex is now a brand name for consumables used by the ESAB group. As far as I can tell, Murex 6013 and ESAB OK 46.30 are exactly the same thing in different boxes, both made in their factory in Hungary.

The datasheets are nearly identical and are identical as regards chemical and mechanical properties. They even have the same people signing them off. The range of sizes is slightly different.

There might be a variation between batches, or the dryness of the electrodes. A variation between the machines you were using or maybe you just had a better day when you were using the Murex.

Got some cheap 3.2 rods today £11,plus VAT. Weldarc 6013 in a red plastic box, seem quite easy to strike and restart, coating comes off easy on a flat run, seems to provide a reasonable bead to me.
